Plot Summary
In the heat of Seville, beguiling nightclub singer Juan de Dios (Ramon Novarro) leads a life of pleasure and song — until one restless evening, he glimpses the devout and innocent Maria (Dorothy Jordan) at the convent gates. The encounter strikes him like lightning. Maria, destined for a life of religious service, finds her faith tested by a passion she has never been taught to name.
What follows is a collision between the sacred and the profane: Juan’s guardian and rival (Ernest Torrence) fights for Maria’s soul, while the bold street singer Lola (Renée Adorée) schemes to reclaim Juan’s attention for herself. As musical performances give way to emotional confrontations and the pull of desire grows impossible to resist, Juan must choose between the life of pleasure that has always defined him and a love that demands something altogether different.
Bursting with lavish musical sequences — Novarro’s singing voice was one of the era’s most celebrated — Call of the Flesh is a vivid, unashamed melodrama that exemplifies the extraordinary creative freedom of pre-Code Hollywood.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
Call of the Flesh is a feast for the eyes even in its original black and white form. In this expertly restored and colorized version, the film’s lavish Spanish atmosphere becomes genuinely spectacular. The flaming reds and burnt golds of Seville’s flamenco costumes, the cool whitewashed walls of the convent, the hot amber glow of the nightclub interiors — all applied with careful period research, frame by frame, to produce an authentic and visually sumptuous result.
Ramon Novarro was one of the great beauties of early Hollywood, and in color his screen presence achieves something close to the luminous impact that original audiences experienced in the silent era. The musical sequences — choreographed with real theatrical flair — take on added excitement when the finery of the performers’ costumes bursts into color. This is a classic film worth experiencing in its fullest, most vivid form.
This classic film is also available in colour for international audiences.

Historical Significance
Released in 1930, Call of the Flesh arrived during Hollywood’s thrilling and turbulent early sound period. Ramon Novarro had been one of the greatest stars of the silent era — his Ben-Hur (1925) was a global phenomenon — and this film demonstrated that his voice and charisma could carry the new medium with full force. As a pre-Code production, it enjoyed a creative freedom that would be unavailable to Hollywood filmmakers after the strict enforcement of the Production Code in 1934: explicit desire, religious conflict, and sexual rivalry all depicted with unusual candor. Call of the Flesh is a rare and essential window into early sound Hollywood at its most ambitious and unguarded, and an indispensable chapter in the career of a true screen legend. It remains a captivating and underappreciated classic movie.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is pre-Code Hollywood?
“Pre-Code” refers to American films made between roughly 1929 and 1934, before the strict enforcement of the Hays Production Code. These films were free to explore themes of desire, sexuality, moral ambiguity, and religious conflict in ways that were banned from Hollywood for the next three decades. Call of the Flesh is a prime example of this extraordinary creative period.
Was Ramon Novarro really singing in the film?
Yes. Novarro had a genuine operatic-quality tenor voice, and the musical sequences in Call of the Flesh showcase real vocal performances — one of the reasons the film was such a success in the early sound era.
How does the Seville setting affect the film?
The setting is central to the story’s emotional logic: Seville’s dual identity as a city of sacred religious tradition and passionate secular life — flamenco, carnival, desire — mirrors the conflict within the central characters perfectly. The colorization makes this contrast visually explicit for the first time.
