Storyline

It’s the early nineteenth century, and young Dr. Noboru Yasumoto has received an unexpected summons from rural Koishikawa Medical Clinic, pulling him away from Nagasaki where he has been stationed for three years, completing his internship.

The clinic, under the leadership of the seemingly austere Dr. Kyojô Niide, fondly referred to as “Red Beard” due to this very trait, adheres to his strict principles in delivering medical care to the underprivileged and marginalized in the region. To Yasumoto’s surprise and dismay, he’s informed that he must begin working there immediately, with all staff, including doctors, residing on-site.

Anticipating a prestigious position as a physician for the shogunate, Yasumoto expresses his displeasure with this fate at every opportunity.

He firmly believes that either Red Beard meticulously orchestrated this fate, driven solely by his desire to access Yasumoto’s detailed professional notes – Yasumoto held a strong conviction that he was a far superior doctor compared to his more experienced superior – or the father of a female acquaintance was behind it all, with a calculated effort to get rid of him.

Yasumoto may gain a different perspective on life as a doctor at the clinic by witnessing Red Beard’s methods firsthand, getting to know the stories of some of the in-patients at the clinic, and taking charge of his first patient, Otoyo, a twelve-year-old orphaned girl who endured an abusive brothel environment in an attempt to shape her supposed future.
