Plot Summary
Lieutenant Vladimir Dubrovsky (Rudolph Valentino) is a young Russian cavalry officer serving under the command of the corrupt Czarina Catherine II (Louise Dresser). When Vladimir’s father receives a visit from the cruel landowner Kyrilla Troekouroff (James A. Marcus), he is forced to sign over his estate under threat of violence. Kyrilla acts on behalf of his powerful patron, and the elder Dubrovsky dies of shame and despair.
Vowing revenge, Vladimir adopts the secret identity of The Black Eagle, a masked highwayman who robs from the rich and terrorizes Kyrilla’s regime. His daring exploits make him a folk hero among the oppressed peasantry and a nightmare for the corrupt aristocracy. When the Black Eagle infiltrates Kyrilla’s household disguised as a French tutor named Marcel Le Blanc, he finds himself in a far more complicated situation than he anticipated.
Kyrilla’s daughter Mascha (Vilma Banky) is beautiful, intelligent, and compassionate — everything her father is not. As Marcel, Vladimir falls deeply in love with her, torn between his mission of vengeance and his growing devotion to the daughter of his enemy. Mascha, unaware of his true identity, is equally drawn to the mysterious tutor who teaches her more than French grammar.
The tension escalates as the Czarina herself arrives and takes a romantic interest in Vladimir, complicating his disguise and endangering everyone he loves. In a thrilling climax, the Black Eagle must rescue Mascha, expose Kyrilla’s crimes, and escape with his life and his love. The film combines thrilling action, witty comedy, and genuine romance in one of Valentino’s most entertaining performances.
