Plot Summary
Victor Albee Norman (Clark Gable) is a suave, war-hardened advertising executive who returns from military service to the glittering but shallow world of Madison Avenue. He quickly lands a position at the Kimberly agency, tasked with handling their biggest and most demanding client: Evan Llewellyn Evans (Sydney Greenstreet), the tyrannical soap magnate whose product, Beautee Soap, is the agency’s bread and butter.
Evans is a grotesque corporate bully who rules his business empire through intimidation, humiliation, and the constant threat of withdrawing his account. In one of the film’s most memorable scenes, he spits on the boardroom table to demonstrate his advertising philosophy — crude shock tactics that bypass taste and intelligence to hammer a product into the public consciousness. The agency executives grovel before him, and Victor is expected to do the same.
Victor’s personal life becomes equally complicated when he falls for the elegant war widow Kay Dorrance (Deborah Kerr), a woman of genuine culture and integrity who represents everything the advertising world is not. Their developing romance forces Victor to confront the moral emptiness of his profession. Meanwhile, the seductive Jean Ogilvie (Ava Gardner), a nightclub singer, offers easier pleasures without the troublesome demands of conscience.
As Victor works to satisfy Evans’s impossible demands — creating radio campaigns that are essentially exercises in repetitive brainwashing — his admiration for Kay’s integrity gradually erodes his willingness to compromise. The film builds toward a climactic confrontation between Victor and the monstrous Evans, in which Victor must choose between the lucrative career that requires selling his soul and the self-respect that Kay’s love has awakened in him.

Historical Significance
Released in 1947, The Hucksters was adapted from Frederick Wakeman’s bestselling novel satirizing the post-war advertising boom. The film premiered the same year as the real-world emergence of television advertising, making its critique prophetically timely. It marked Deborah Kerr’s Hollywood debut and featured an all-star MGM cast at the studio’s peak. The film’s portrait of corporate bullying and moral compromise remains strikingly relevant. Through colorization, this sharp satire is preserved for modern audiences.

Q: Is this Deborah Kerr’s first American film?
A: Yes, The Hucksters marked the Hollywood debut of Deborah Kerr, the acclaimed British actress who would go on to star in From Here to Eternity, The King and I, and An Affair to Remember. Her elegant presence immediately established her as a major Hollywood star.
