Plot Summary
The White family β father, mother, and their adult son Herbert β live a comfortable and contented life in their modest English home. Their peaceful existence is disrupted when an old friend, Sergeant-Major Morris, visits after years of military service in India. Over drinks by the fire, Morris produces a strange artifact β a dried monkey’s paw that he claims has been enchanted by an Indian fakir to grant three wishes to its owner.
Morris warns the family in the strongest terms against using the paw, describing the horrors that befell its previous owners and his own harrowing experiences with it. He attempts to destroy it by throwing it into the fire, but Mr. White rescues the paw, unable to resist the temptation of having three wishes at his disposal despite every warning he has heard.
The first wish is made almost casually β Mr. White wishes for a modest sum of money to pay off the mortgage on their home. The money arrives the next day, but delivered in the form of a compensation payment from the factory where their son Herbert worked β Herbert has been killed in a terrible accident involving industrial machinery, and the compensation happens to be exactly the amount wished for.
Mad with grief, Mrs. White demands that her husband use the second wish to bring Herbert back to life. Mr. White reluctantly complies, but as they wait in the darkness of their home, they are seized with growing horror at the realization of what might be returning β Herbert’s body was horribly mutilated in the accident, and whatever walks to their door may not be the son they knew. The mounting tension as something approaches their locked door creates one of the most terrifying sequences in horror cinema.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
The colorization of The Monkey’s Paw enhances the atmosphere of creeping domestic horror β the warm amber glow of the sitting room fireplace casting dancing shadows on comfortable but aging furnishings, the sickly yellowed brown of the dried monkey’s paw itself sitting on the mantelpiece, the deep green of heavy curtains drawn against the cold English night, the warm cream of wallpapered rooms that feel increasingly claustrophobic as terror mounts, the cold blue-black of the night outside the windows where something may be approaching, the deep mahogany brown of Victorian furniture and wooden floorboards that creak with every step, the pale ghost-white of moonlight filtering through gaps in the curtains, the warm red of the fire flickering lower as midnight approaches, the cold grey of rainy English exteriors in funeral scenes, and the deep shadow-black of darkened corridors and stairwells where imagination transforms every sound into approaching horror. Historical Significance
W.W. Jacobs’ The Monkey’s Paw, first published in 1902, is widely regarded as one of the greatest horror stories ever written, and this 1948 film adaptation captures its devastating power with admirable fidelity. The story’s influence on horror fiction and cinema is incalculable β its template of ‘be careful what you wish for’ has been echoed in countless works from Stephen King’s Pet Sematary to numerous Twilight Zone episodes. The film demonstrates the British tradition of atmospheric, suggestion-based horror that prioritizes psychological dread over visual shocks. Its restraint β the most terrifying moment involves nothing more than a knock at a door β proves that horror’s greatest tool is the human imagination, a lesson that the most effective horror filmmakers continue to apply today. Through colorization, this essential piece of horror cinema is preserved for modern audiences.
