Plot Summary
Ahmed, the son of the legendary Sheik Ahmed Ben Hassan, has grown up in the shadow of his father’s romantic legend. Educated in Europe and raised with the values of both the Arab world and Western civilization, Ahmed is a modern man who struggles with the legacy of his father’s passionate nature. While traveling through the desert, Ahmed encounters Yasmin, the beautiful daughter of a Frenchman named Andrés Romez who lives among the Arabs. The attraction is immediate and powerful, echoing the romance that brought his parents together years before.
However, Yasmin is part of a troupe of entertainers led by Ghabah, a cunning and unscrupulous bandit who uses Yasmin’s beauty to lure wealthy travelers into traps. When Ahmed falls into one of these traps, he is beaten and humiliated, believing that Yasmin has betrayed him. The experience awakens in Ahmed the wild, passionate nature of his father — the “sheik” within that he has tried to suppress. He vows revenge against Yasmin and her bandit associates.
Ahmed adopts a disguise, posing as a rough and dangerous Arab bandit himself. In this new identity, he infiltrates Ghabah’s camp and begins a campaign of revenge against those who humiliated him. The situation becomes increasingly complex as Ahmed’s feelings for Yasmin conflict with his desire for vengeance. Yasmin, meanwhile, has been forced into her role by Ghabah and genuinely cares for Ahmed, leading to misunderstandings and emotional turmoil on both sides.
The film builds to a dramatic climax as Ahmed’s true identity is revealed and the conflict between love and revenge reaches its breaking point. The resolution brings reconciliation and understanding, with Ahmed embracing both his civilized upbringing and his passionate heritage. The special edition includes extended scenes that deepen the character development, expand the romantic subplot, and provide additional context to the relationship between father and son, making this the most complete version of Valentino’s final film.
