Plot Summary

Lady Barbara Doyle-Doyle (Margaret Lockwood) is a beautiful, restless, and utterly unscrupulous woman living in Restoration England who craves excitement and power above all else. When her childhood friend Caroline (Patricia Roc) becomes engaged to the wealthy and eligible Sir Ralph Doyle-Doyle (Griffith Jones), Barbara schemes ruthlessly to steal the man for herself. Through calculated manipulation and cold-blooded betrayal of her trusting friend, Barbara succeeds in marrying Sir Ralph and becoming mistress of his grand estate.

But marriage to a decent and unsuspecting man quickly bores the restless Barbara. After discovering that the previous owner of the estate had been a notorious highwayman, Barbara is seized by a thrilling and dangerous idea. By night, disguised in a mask and riding cloak, she takes to the roads as a highwaywoman, holding up coaches and robbing wealthy travellers at gunpoint. The danger and lawlessness of her secret life provide exactly the excitement that her respectable daytime existence lacks, and Barbara discovers she has a natural talent for criminal enterprise.

Her nocturnal adventures lead her into an alliance — and a passionate affair — with the notorious highwayman Captain Jerry Jackson (James Mason), whose dangerous charm matches her own appetite for recklessness and defiance of convention. But two ruthless and selfish people cannot long remain allies, and their partnership degenerates into a deadly rivalry as each attempts to outwit and betray the other. Meanwhile, Barbara’s increasingly reckless behaviour threatens to expose her secret identity, and the net of suspicion draws tighter as stolen jewels are traced and servants begin to talk. The film hurtles toward a violent and richly deserved conclusion in which Barbara’s web of lies, murder, and treachery finally collapses around her in a climax that is as dramatically satisfying as it is morally uncompromising.

Historical Significance

The Wicked Lady was the highest-grossing British film of 1946 and caused a sensation with its frank portrayal of female sexuality and criminality. Margaret Lockwood’s décolletage was so daring by contemporary standards that several scenes had to be reshot for the American release. The film is a landmark of the Gainsborough melodrama cycle — a series of lavish, emotionally uninhibited costume dramas that defined British popular cinema during the 1940s. Its portrait of a woman who refuses to accept the limitations society places upon her sex remains remarkably modern and entertaining. Through colorization, this gloriously entertaining and daringly provocative period adventure has been preserved for modern audiences who appreciate swashbuckling entertainment and magnificent screen villainy.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Movie-Specific Questions

Q: Was The Wicked Lady really controversial when it was released?
A: Yes. The film caused a genuine scandal, particularly in America, where several scenes were reshot because Margaret Lockwood’s costumes were considered too revealing. In Britain, the combination of female villainy, sexual frankness, and gleeful criminality made it both controversial and enormously popular.

Q: How does Margaret Lockwood compare to other classic screen villains?
A: Lockwood’s Barbara is one of the great screen villains — utterly amoral, brilliantly intelligent, and thoroughly entertaining. Her performance demonstrates that screen villainy is not exclusively the province of male actors, and her wicked lady remains one of British cinema’s most memorable characters.

Q: Does the colorization enhance the period atmosphere?
A: Tremendously. The rich Restoration costumes, the candlelit interiors, and the moonlit highway sequences are beautifully served by colorization that brings the opulent period setting to vivid and sumptuous visual life.
