Plot Summary
Jim Thorpe grows up on the Sac and Fox reservation in Oklahoma, a young man of extraordinary physical ability who runs, jumps, and throws with an effortless natural grace that astonishes everyone who sees him. His talents bring him to the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania, where the shrewd, demanding coach Glenn “Pop” Warner recognises in Thorpe a once-in-a-generation athletic genius.
Under Warner’s guidance, Thorpe becomes the most dominant college athlete in America. On the football field, he is virtually unstoppable — a combination of speed, power, and agility that opposing teams simply cannot contain. In track and field, he excels at every event he enters. His fame grows with each season until he is selected for the American team at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm.
In Stockholm, Thorpe achieves what no athlete has done before or since — winning gold medals in both the pentathlon and the decathlon, dominating the most demanding tests of all-around athletic ability. King Gustav V of Sweden tells him, “Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world,” and Thorpe’s reply — “Thanks, King” — becomes one of sports’ most famous moments.
But triumph turns to devastation when it is discovered that Thorpe had played semi-professional baseball for small pay before the Olympics, technically violating his amateur status. The Amateur Athletic Union strips him of his medals — a punishment widely regarded as unjust and racially motivated. The loss breaks something in Thorpe. Despite success as a professional football player and baseball player, his personal life deteriorates. The death of his young son and the collapse of his marriage drive him toward alcoholism and poverty. The film follows Thorpe’s painful decline and his struggle to find meaning and dignity beyond the athletic glory that was taken from him.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
The athletic spectacle — the green football fields of Carlisle, the track and field events at Stockholm’s Olympic stadium, the sunlit baseball diamonds, the autumn colours of college campuses — is magnificently enhanced through expert colorization. The period sporting uniforms, the international pageantry of the Olympics, the distinctive Carlisle Indian School jersey, and the changing landscapes of early twentieth-century America gain extraordinary visual richness in full colour. The contrast between the bright colours of athletic triumph and the grey tones of Thorpe’s later decline becomes a powerful visual metaphor. Now also available in colour. Historical Significance
Jim Thorpe is widely regarded as the greatest multi-sport athlete in history, and this 1951 biopic — made with Thorpe’s cooperation during his lifetime — remains the most significant film treatment of his extraordinary and tragic story. Director Michael Curtiz, who had directed Casablanca and countless other classics, brought his characteristic energy and emotional power to the material. The film played a role in the long campaign to restore Thorpe’s Olympic medals, which finally succeeded posthumously in 1983 when the International Olympic Committee reinstated his records. Burt Lancaster’s athletic performance — he genuinely resembled a world-class athlete in the sporting sequences — added authenticity that a less physically gifted actor could not have provided. The film also honestly depicted the discrimination Thorpe faced as a Native American in early twentieth-century America. Through colorization, this important sports biography has been preserved for modern audiences.
