Plot Summary

The Lone Prospector (Charlie Chaplin) arrives in the frozen Yukon during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush, a tiny figure trudging through vast snowscapes with nothing but his cane, bowler hat, and indomitable optimism. A brutal blizzard forces him to seek shelter in the cabin of Black Larsen, a dangerous fugitive, where he also encounters Big Jim McKay (Mack Swain), a burly prospector who has just discovered a mountain of gold.

Trapped together by the storm with no food, starvation drives the men to desperate measures. In one of cinema’s most iconic scenes, Charlie cooks and eats his own boot, twirling the laces like spaghetti and savoring the sole like a gourmet steak. Big Jim, delirious with hunger, hallucinates that Charlie has transformed into a giant chicken and chases him around the cabin with a knife, leading to a terrifying and hilarious struggle.

After the storm, Charlie wanders into a gold rush boom town where he falls desperately in love with Georgia (Georgia Hale), a beautiful dance-hall girl who barely notices his existence. He invites her and her friends to a New Year’s Eve dinner, spending everything he has on preparations. In the poignant centerpiece of the film, Charlie sits alone at his carefully set table, waiting for guests who never come. He falls asleep and dreams of entertaining them with the legendary “Oceana Roll” — a delicate dance performed with two bread rolls on forks, moving like tiny feet in a ballet that remains one of the most famous sequences in film history.

Charlie’s luck eventually turns when he reunites with Big Jim, who has lost his memory but remembers the gold strike. Together they locate the claim and become millionaires. On the voyage home, Charlie is reunited with Georgia aboard the ship, and their romance finally blossoms — proving that even a little tramp can strike it rich in both love and fortune.
