Plot Summary

Anarene, Texas, 1951. A desolate, wind-scoured small town in the flat expanse of North Texas is slowly dying — its businesses closing, its population dwindling, its spirit draining away as surely as the dust blows through its empty streets. At the centre of this fading world are two best friends: Sonny Crawford (Timothy Bottoms), a quiet, sensitive high school senior, and Duane Jackson (Jeff Bridges), his more reckless and impulsive companion. Both boys are restless, yearning for something more than Anarene can offer, though neither can articulate exactly what that something is.

The boys’ lives revolve around three institutions: the football field where they fail spectacularly, the pool hall owned by the wise and laconic Sam the Lion (Ben Johnson) — the last vital man in a town full of defeated people — and the Royal, the town’s only movie theatre, which is itself teetering on the edge of closure. Sonny drifts into a tender, heartbreaking affair with Ruth Popper (Cloris Leachman), the lonely, neglected middle-aged wife of the high school football coach — a relationship that gives both of them something genuine and precious in a town starved of real human connection.

Meanwhile, Duane becomes obsessed with Jacy Farrow (Cybill Shepherd), the town’s most beautiful and desired girl, whose wealthy, worldly mother Lois (Ellen Burstyn) encourages her daughter’s manipulative appetites. Jacy’s cruel, careless toying with Duane’s feelings destroys the boys’ friendship and sets in motion a chain of consequences that will shatter multiple lives. When Sam the Lion dies unexpectedly — the last anchor of decency and warmth in Anarene — the entire town seems to give up. The Royal closes its doors forever, screening Red River as its final film. Sonny, having foolishly abandoned Ruth for a fleeting, disastrous fling with Jacy, must confront the devastating consequences of his choices in a final scene of extraordinary emotional power.

Cast & Crew

Director: Peter Bogdanovich
Stars: Timothy Bottoms is quietly devastating as Sonny, the sensitive young man searching for meaning in a dying world. Jeff Bridges, in his breakthrough role, brings raw charisma and wounded intensity to Duane. Cybill Shepherd is icily magnetic in her film debut as the beautiful, selfish Jacy. Ben Johnson won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor as the unforgettable Sam the Lion, and Cloris Leachman won Best Supporting Actress for her achingly vulnerable Ruth Popper — one of cinema’s most emotionally devastating performances. Ellen Burstyn is superb as Jacy’s knowing mother.

Historical Significance

Released in 1971, The Last Picture Show was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won two: Best Supporting Actor for Ben Johnson and Best Supporting Actress for Cloris Leachman. Based on Larry McMurtry’s autobiographical novel, it launched the careers of Jeff Bridges, Cybill Shepherd, and director Peter Bogdanovich, while reviving the career of Ben Johnson. The film’s decision to shoot in black and white was revolutionary for 1971 and has been widely imitated since. Through colorization, this landmark of 1970s American cinema is preserved for modern audiences in a new visual interpretation.
