Plot Summary
Julien Vercel (Jean-Louis Trintignant), an estate agent in southern France, goes duck hunting one morning. That same day, a fellow hunter named Massoulier is shot dead at the same lake. When police discover Julien’s fingerprints on Massoulier’s car door — he had innocently closed it and switched off the headlights — he becomes the prime suspect.
The investigation soon reveals a devastating complication: the murdered Massoulier was having an affair with Julien’s wife, Marie-Christine (Caroline Sihol). When Julien confronts her, she nonchalantly confirms her infidelity. Days later, Marie-Christine herself is murdered. Julien is now suspected of both killings.
Desperate to prove his innocence, Julien goes into hiding in his own real estate office. It is his secretary, Barbara Becker (Fanny Ardant) — who harbors a secret love for her boss — who takes matters into her own capable hands. Bold, resourceful, and irresistibly determined, Barbara travels to Nice to investigate Marie-Christine’s past life. She discovers that Marie-Christine’s real name was Josiane Kerbel, that she was previously married to a gambler, and that she was drowning in debt when she married Julien.
Barbara’s investigation leads her through cinemas, nightclubs, and the dangerous underworld, as more bodies pile up and the net closes around Julien. In a thrilling final twist, the identity of the true killer is revealed — someone much closer to Julien than anyone suspected. The film ends with Julien and Barbara, united by the ordeal, beginning a new life together.
