Plot Summary
Michel (Gérard Philipe), a young man of modest means, has stolen money from his employer — not for greed, but for love. He is desperately in love with Juliette (Suzanne Cloutier), a beautiful and mysterious young woman, and the stolen money was to help build a future for them. But Michel is caught, tried, and sentenced to prison.
Behind bars, Michel’s thoughts return obsessively to Juliette. One night, he escapes — not through the prison walls, but into a strange, ethereal dreamworld that exists outside of ordinary time and space. In this surreal landscape, Michel finds himself in a peculiar village where nothing is quite as it seems. The inhabitants live in a state of waking dream, their memories erased, their identities uncertain.
Michel searches desperately for Juliette through this mysterious village, encountering strange characters and surreal situations. He discovers that in this world of dreams, Juliette exists but does not remember him. She is the unattainable beloved, always just out of reach, her identity and their shared history dissolved in the fog of the dream.
As Michel navigates this poetic and unsettling landscape, the boundaries between dream and reality, memory and desire, become increasingly blurred. He must confront the possibility that the love he seeks may exist only in his imagination — or that the dream world holds a deeper truth about the nature of love and longing than the waking world ever could. Marcel Carné crafts an achingly beautiful meditation on lost love, the power of memory, and the fragile boundary between dreams and reality.

Historical Significance
Juliette, or Key of Dreams occupies a fascinating place in French cinema history. It was directed by Marcel Carné, the legendary filmmaker behind Les Enfants du Paradis (1945), widely considered one of the greatest films ever made. While Juliette was not as commercially successful as Carné’s earlier masterpieces, it is prized by cinephiles for its poetic ambition and visual beauty. It stars Gérard Philipe (1922-1959), whose early death at age 36 cut short a career of extraordinary brilliance — he remains an icon of French cinema. The film bridges the poetic realism of 1930s-40s French cinema and the emerging modernism of the 1950s.
