Plot Summary

In 1820s Paris, the charismatic and dangerous Joseph Balsamo (Orson Welles) — reinvented as the mysterious Count Alessandro di Cagliostro — weaves a web of hypnosis, seduction, and revenge across the salons of French high society. As a child, Balsamo watched helplessly as his beloved mentor was destroyed by the powerful men who now surround the court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette (Nancy Guild). His elaborate scheme for revenge involves substituting a hypnotized look-alike for the Queen herself, destabilizing the French monarchy from within using the dark arts of suggestion and illusion.

Standing against Cagliostro is Gilbert de Rezel (Frank Latimore), a young idealist who seeks to protect both Marie Antoinette and Lorenza (also Nancy Guild), the woman Cagliostro has enslaved through hypnosis, and with whom Gilbert has fallen deeply in love. The scheming Gitano (Akim Tamiroff) serves as Cagliostro’s reluctant accomplice, while the young Alexandre Dumas, Jr. (Raymond Burr, in an early role) observes these extraordinary events as the basis for future stories. The plot builds through spectacular set pieces — magic demonstrations, royal banquets, hypnotic duels — to a confrontation of operatic intensity, with Welles commanding every scene with his booming voice and magnetic physical presence.

Historical Significance

Released in 1949, Black Magic draws from the real and fascinating history of Giuseppe Balsamo (1743–1795), the Italian adventurer known as Count Cagliostro — a genuine historical figure who moved through the courts of Europe performing alleged magical feats, conducting Masonic rituals, and accumulating both enormous admiration and powerful enemies before his final imprisonment by the Inquisition. The film was produced by Edward Small and shot partly in Italy, giving it a European grandeur unusual for American productions of the period. For Orson Welles, it represented an early post-Citizen Kane phase in which he took flamboyant roles in international productions while seeking financing for his own directorial projects, and his investment of theatrical energy in Cagliostro is total. Raymond Burr, later famous as Perry Mason, appears here in one of his earliest film roles. Black Magic is a fascinating document of post-war Hollywood’s engagement with European history and theatrical excess.
