Plot Summary

Stretch Dawson and his gang ride into a small Arizona town, rob the bank with ruthless efficiency, and flee into the desert with a posse in pursuit. To shake their pursuers, Stretch makes a reckless gamble: he leads his men across an enormous alkali flat — miles of blinding white salt crust stretching to the horizon under a merciless sun where no water, no shade, and no life exists.

The crossing is a nightmare. The heat is unbearable, the salt crystals blind them, their water runs out, and their horses begin to die. The men turn on each other with the savagery of animals — Dude, the most dangerous and unstable of the gang, grows increasingly violent and unpredictable.
