Plot Summary

Jimmy Ringo (Gregory Peck) is the fastest draw in the West, and it is killing him — not through bullets, but through the endless procession of young men who seek him out to make their reputations. Exhausted and aging before his time, Ringo rides into the small town of Cayenne with one desperate hope: to see his estranged wife Peggy (Helen Westcott) and the young son he has never been allowed to know, and to convince them to flee with him to a place where nobody has heard the name Jimmy Ringo.

But Ringo’s reputation arrives before he does. Within minutes of entering the town saloon, the bartender recognizes him, and word spreads like wildfire. The town marshal, Mark Strett (Millard Mitchell), is an old friend who understands Ringo’s predicament but knows that his presence is a magnet for trouble. He gives Ringo a limited time to make his case to Peggy while trying to keep the curious and the dangerous at bay.

The tension builds relentlessly as the clock ticks down on Ringo’s visit. Three brothers of a man Ringo killed are riding toward town seeking revenge. Young Hunt Bromley (Skip Homeier), a cocky local punk, circles the saloon like a vulture, desperate for the chance to gun down the legendary gunfighter and inherit his fame. Townspeople gather outside, some sympathetic, others hungry for spectacle. Peggy, now a schoolteacher who has built a respectable life, must decide whether love is worth the certain danger that follows Ringo everywhere.

Through it all, Ringo sits in the saloon, drinking coffee, watching the door — a man who cannot run fast enough to escape what he has been, waiting to learn whether the future holds redemption or one final, inevitable confrontation.

Gregory Peck delivers one of his finest performances as Ringo, conveying bone-deep weariness and quiet dignity in a man who has become a prisoner of his own legend. Millard Mitchell provides excellent support as the marshal torn between friendship and duty. Skip Homeier is chillingly effective as the young glory-seeker, representing everything Ringo once was and fears he cannot escape.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

This professionally colorized edition of The Gunfighter brings the sun-bleached frontier town to atmospheric life. The dusty streets, weathered saloon interiors, and the harsh Western light gain rich visual texture, while the contrast between the warm outdoor scenes and the claustrophobic saloon interior powerfully reinforces the film’s themes of entrapment. Peck’s haunted performance gains new visual depth in color. Now also available in colour.

Historical Significance

Released in 1950, The Gunfighter revolutionized the Western genre by replacing action spectacle with psychological intensity. Henry King’s direction creates unbearable suspense from a premise that unfolds almost entirely in a single saloon over one afternoon. The film profoundly influenced later revisionist Westerns including High Noon and Unforgiven. Through colorization, this landmark Western is preserved for modern audiences.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Movie-Specific Questions

Q: Why is this considered a landmark Western?
A: The Gunfighter essentially invented the “tired gunfighter” subgenre and pioneered the psychological Western. Rather than celebrating frontier violence, it examines its human cost. The film’s influence can be traced directly through High Noon (1952), Shane (1953), and eventually Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven (1992).

Q: Was Gregory Peck nominated for an Oscar for this role?
A: Surprisingly no, though the film received an Oscar nomination for Best Motion Picture Story. Peck’s performance is widely regarded as one of his finest, and the film’s critical reputation has only grown with time.

Q: How much of the film takes place in the saloon?
A: The majority of the film unfolds in and around a single saloon over the course of one afternoon, creating an almost real-time sense of mounting tension. This claustrophobic structure was revolutionary for a Western and gives the film a theatrical intensity.
