Plot Summary

Lance Poole rides home to Sweet Meadows, Wyoming, in 1865, a hero. He is a Shoshone who fought for the Union Army through some of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, including Gettysburg, and he wears the Congressional Medal of Honor on his chest. His ranch in the high country — land his family has worked and loved for generations — is waiting for him, and all Lance wants is to raise his cattle in peace and live as an American among Americans.

But Lance discovers that while he was fighting for his country, the laws of that country have been rewritten to exclude him. The Homestead Act allows white settlers to claim “unused” land — and because Lance is classified as an Indian, he cannot legally file a claim on his own property. Verne Coolan, a wealthy and politically connected land speculator, sees Lance’s predicament as an opportunity. Coolan begins bringing in settlers to file homestead claims on Poole’s ranch, knowing that the law favours white claimants over Native Americans regardless of prior occupancy.

Lance seeks legal help from Orrie Masters (Paula Raymond), a young attorney who is initially prejudiced against him but comes to admire his dignity and the justice of his cause.
