Plot Summary
Lily Mars is a small-town girl in Clarksburg, Indiana, with a dream so enormous and so all-consuming that it has become the defining force of her young life: she is utterly, passionately, and unshakably determined to become a Broadway star. When the famous New York theatrical producer John Thornway visits her small Indiana town to see his family, Lily seizes every possible opportunity to audition for him, showing up uninvited at his front door with monologues prepared, crashing his private rehearsals, following him through town, and generally making herself an inescapable and irrepressible nuisance with an enthusiasm so overwhelming and so persistent that Thornway cannot decide whether to admire her courage or have her arrested for trespassing. Thornway is alternately deeply annoyed and reluctantly charmed by her tireless persistence and undeniable raw talent, and when he returns to New York he eventually and somewhat against his better judgment gives her a small part in his new Broadway production — partly because she is genuinely talented, partly because she simply will not take no for an answer, and partly because he has begun to feel something more than professional interest in this impossibly determined young woman. But the road from small-town Indiana hopeful to Broadway performer is paved with brutal setbacks, fierce rivalries, and devastating disappointments that test every ounce of Lily’s legendary determination. The show’s temperamental leading lady sees Lily as a threat and makes her life miserable backstage, the demanding New York theater world has little patience for wide-eyed newcomers, and the growing romantic tension between Lily and the sophisticated producer who does not quite know what to make of her creates complications that threaten both her career and her heart. As the pressure mounts and opening night approaches with terrifying speed, Lily must dig deep and prove once and for all that she has the extraordinary talent, the courage, and the star quality to match the ambition that has driven her from a small Indiana town to the bright lights of Broadway. This classic movie is a delightful and dazzling backstage musical showcasing Judy Garland’s extraordinary talent and infectious personality at the height of her powers.

Historical Significance
Released in 1943, Presenting Lily Mars was based on the beloved novel by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Booth Tarkington, whose gentle and affectionate portrayals of small-town American life had made him one of the most popular writers in the country. The film represented a significant moment in Judy Garland’s career, showcasing her transition from the teenage roles that had made her famous in The Wizard of Oz and the Andy Hardy series to more mature and dramatically demanding parts that hinted at the extraordinary depth she would bring to later masterworks like A Star Is Born and The Clock. Van Heflin had just won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Johnny Eager when this film was released, bringing heavyweight dramatic credibility to the role of the sophisticated Broadway producer. Director Norman Taurog, a reliable MGM craftsman who had previously directed several of the popular Mickey Rooney–Garland musicals, knew exactly how to showcase Garland’s unique combination of vocal brilliance, comedic timing, and emotional vulnerability. The film features a justly famous extended finale featuring a young Bob Crosby and his orchestra, and also includes early appearances by several performers who would go on to significant careers. Through modern colorization, this enchanting and historically important Garland musical reaches new audiences who can experience the magic of one of Hollywood’s greatest talents.
