Plot Summary
In the glittering, waltz-filled world of turn-of-the-century Vienna, Lieutenant Fritz Lobheimer is a charming young officer whose dangerous affair with Baroness Eggersdorf — the wife of a powerful and jealous man — has been the talk of his regiment. Fritz’s friend and fellow officer Theo urges him to end the liaison before catastrophe strikes.
Fritz meets Christine Weiring, the innocent, warm-hearted daughter of a violinist at the Vienna Court Opera, and falls genuinely in love for the first time. Christine, who lives a modest life with her devoted father, gives her whole heart to Fritz with a purity and trust that is completely foreign to the sophisticated, dangerous world he inhabits. For a brief, radiant time, their love transforms both of them — Fritz discovers sincerity, and Christine discovers joy.
But the past cannot be escaped. Baron Eggersdorf discovers the affair and challenges Fritz to a duel. Fritz, bound by the rigid code of military honor, cannot refuse. He cannot tell Christine the truth — that he may die tomorrow — and instead spends their last evening together in a heartbreaking scene of concealed anguish and desperate tenderness. The duel’s outcome sends Christine into a spiral of grief and despair so profound that even the love of her devoted father cannot save her. This classic movie is a devastating portrait of how innocence is destroyed by the cruel conventions of a society built on honor, class, and masculine pride.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
This professionally colorized and restored version brings the romantic elegance of Habsburg Vienna to vivid life. The colorization process reveals the ornate opera house interiors, the military uniforms with their bright facings and polished buttons, the cozy warmth of Christine’s modest apartment, and the grand ballrooms of Viennese society in rich, period-accurate detail. Magda Schneider — the real-life mother of Romy Schneider and one of the most beloved actresses of German-language cinema — radiates luminous innocence in color, her expressive face conveying a joy and vulnerability that is heartbreaking to witness. The visual contrast between Christine’s simple, warm world and the cold, formal elegance of the aristocratic sphere becomes a powerful metaphor for the class divide that ultimately destroys the lovers. Now also available in colour.

Historical Significance
Liebelei is one of the most important early works by Max Ophüls, the German-born director who would become one of cinema’s supreme stylists with later masterpieces like Letter from an Unknown Woman, La Ronde, Le Plaisir, and The Earrings of Madame de…. Based on the famous play by Arthur Schnitzler — the Viennese writer whose works also inspired Stanley Kubrick’s final film Eyes Wide Shut — the film established Ophüls’ lifelong themes: the fragility of love, the cruelty of social convention, and the gulf between genuine emotion and the roles society demands people play. Magda Schneider gave the defining performance of her career as Christine, creating a character of such radiant warmth that her fate becomes almost unbearable to watch. Gustaf Gründgens, one of the most celebrated stage actors in German history, brought charismatic menace to his role. The film was made in the final months before Ophüls, who was Jewish, was forced to flee Nazi Germany — making this elegant, humane work one of the last great achievements of pre-exile German cinema.
