Plot Summary

Buck Rogers (1939) opens as the heroic Buck Rogers (Buster Crabbe) and his young companion Buddy Wade (Jackie Moran) are accidentally preserved in suspended animation after a dirigible crash and awakened five centuries in the future to find Earth under the iron grip of the tyrant Killer Kane (Anthony Warde). Kane controls the population through the use of amnesia helmets — devices that reduce free men to obedient slaves — and rules with an iron fist from his fortified headquarters.

Buck and Buddy make contact with the scattered resistance, led by the brilliant Professor Huer (C. Montague Shaw) and the courageous Wilma Deering (Constance Moore). Together they plan to rally support from the hidden planet Saturn and its people, who have remained free of Kane’s domination. The twelve-episode serial follows Buck, Wilma, and Buddy across space, through daring space battles with rocket ships, and into Kane’s fortified strongholds in a relentless campaign to liberate humanity.

Directed by Ford Beebe and Saul A. Goodkind, Buck Rogers was produced at the height of Universal’s serial era and stands as one of the definitive science fiction adventure serials ever made. Buster Crabbe’s physical charisma and genuine screen presence elevate every episode, and the serial’s imaginative production design — rocket ships, space suits, ray guns — established visual conventions for science fiction that influenced the genre for decades.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

Buck Rogers (1939) is the founding text of screen science fiction adventure serials, and Buster Crabbe’s performance defined the heroic archetype for an entire generation of filmmakers and audiences. In the original black and white prints, the inventive production design of Universal’s serial unit — the sleek rocket ships, the alien environments, the futuristic costumes — registers as ingeniously imaginative but visually limited by the grey palette. In this professionally restored and colorized version, that imagination finally finds its full visual expression.

The frame-by-frame colorization applies period-inspired color palettes to every element of the production: the gleaming metalwork of the rocket ships, the green landscapes of Saturn’s surface, the blue-black depths of space, the vibrant costumes of Kane’s forces and the resistance fighters. The result reveals how carefully the original designers considered color even when working in black and white — their choices read beautifully in this restored color edition.

At 237 minutes across twelve episodes, this is essential viewing for any lover of science fiction history, classic film adventure, or simply great entertainment. Buck Rogers established visual and narrative conventions that flow directly through Flash Gordon, Star Wars, and every science fiction film since. Download the complete 1939 serial today, DRM-free, in HD quality — experience the classic film that launched a genre, now in color. This classic movie is also available in colour for international audiences.
