Plot Summary

In the frozen wasteland of the Arctic Circle, a nuclear bomb test unleashes forces far beyond what the scientists intended. Professor Tom Nesbitt witnesses something impossible in the aftermath of the explosion — a gigantic prehistoric creature, freed from the ice where it has been frozen for millions of years, rising from the frozen depths and disappearing into the Arctic seas. When Nesbitt reports what he has seen, he is met with disbelief and ridicule from the scientific establishment.

But the beast is terrifyingly real. As it makes its way southward through the Atlantic, ships are attacked and destroyed, coastal communities report sightings of an enormous creature, and the evidence begins to mount that something ancient and immensely powerful is heading toward civilization. Professor Thurgood Elson, a distinguished paleontologist, is eventually convinced by Nesbitt’s evidence and identifies the creature as a Rhedosaurus, a species thought to have been extinct for a hundred million years.

The beast is drawn inexorably toward New York City — specifically toward the area where its species once lived in the prehistoric past, now the site of a great modern metropolis.
