Plot Summary

Ephraim Cabot is an old man of amazing vitality who loves his New England farm with a greedy passion. The farm has been in his family for generations, and he has worked it with relentless dedication, expecting his sons to do the same. Hating him, and sharing his greed, are the sons of two wives Cabot has overworked into early graves. Most bitter is Eben, whose mother had owned most of the farm, and who feels he should be the sole heir. Eben’s resentment toward his father runs deep, fueled by memories of his mother’s suffering and his belief that the farm rightfully belongs to him.

When the old man brings home a new wife, Anna, the dynamics of the farm change dramatically. Anna is a young woman with her own desires and ambitions, and she quickly realizes that the farm represents security and opportunity. She becomes a fierce contender to inherit the farm, challenging Eben’s claim and creating a new source of conflict in the already tense household. Two of the sons leave when Eben gives them the fare in return for their shares of the farm, unwilling to endure their father’s tyranny any longer.

Meanwhile, Anna tries to cause some sparks by rubbing up against Eben. The attraction between stepmother and stepson is immediate and intense, fueled by mutual resentment of Ephraim and their own desires for the farm. Their relationship becomes sexual, adding a layer of forbidden passion to the already complex family dynamics. Anna uses her relationship with Eben as a weapon against Ephraim, while Eben sees in Anna both a lover and a rival for the inheritance he believes is his birthright.

The situation escalates as Anna becomes pregnant, and the conflict over the farm reaches its breaking point. Ephraim, suspicious of his new wife and her relationship with Eben, becomes increasingly paranoid and controlling. The tension builds toward a tragic climax as greed, lust, and family loyalty collide with devastating consequences. The film ends with multiple deaths and the farm left in ruins, a testament to the destructive power of unchecked greed and forbidden passion. Through the tragedy, O’Neill’s exploration of the human cost of materialism and the corruption of family bonds by greed remains powerful and relevant.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

Desire Under the Elms was originally filmed in black and white, with cinematography that captured the stark beauty of the New England farm and the emotional intensity of the story. This professionally colorized restoration enhances every scene with frame-by-frame precision, from the weathered farmhouse and elms that give the film its title to the fields and pastures where the characters work and struggle. The colorized version reveals new visual richness in the dramatic sequences, where the contrast between the natural beauty of the setting and the ugliness of the characters’ desires becomes even more striking. Sophia Loren, one of cinema’s most beautiful actresses, gains additional luminosity in color, her expressive face conveying the complexity of Anna’s character — her ambition, her vulnerability, her capacity for both love and destruction. Anthony Perkins, early in his career before “Psycho” (1960), brings intensity and sensitivity to the role of Eben. The 1950s American rural settings — the farm, the house, the New England landscape — gain period authenticity that transports viewers to a specific time and place. Now also available in colour.

Historical Significance

Released in 1958, Desire Under the Elms is an adaptation of Eugene O’Neill’s 1924 play of the same name, part of O’Neill’s cycle of plays about American life inspired by Greek tragedy. The play, which draws on the myth of Phaedra and Hippolytus, explores themes of incest, greed, and family conflict with unflinching honesty. The 1958 film adaptation represents one of the first attempts to bring O’Neill’s challenging work to the screen, and while it takes liberties with the source material, it captures the essential themes and emotional power of the original.

Sophia Loren, who had achieved international fame with “Two Women” (1960) and would become one of the most celebrated actresses in cinema history, gives a powerful performance as Anna. This role, coming early in her international career, demonstrated her ability to handle complex dramatic material beyond the glamorous roles that had made her a star. Anthony Perkins, who would become immortalized as Norman Bates in “Psycho” (1960), shows the range and intensity that would make him a compelling actor in both dramatic and horror films. Burl Ives, the folk singer and character actor, brings gravitas to the role of Ephraim Cabot, making the patriarch a figure of both strength and terrifying stubbornness.

Director Delbert Mann, who had won the Academy Award for Best Director for “Marty” (1955), brought his skill with intimate character dramas to this adaptation. The film’s setting on a New England farm and its exploration of family dynamics and greed reflect post-war America’s anxiety about material success and the corruption of traditional values. The film’s frank treatment of sexuality and family conflict was relatively daring for 1958, pushing the boundaries of what was acceptable in mainstream cinema. Through modern colorization, this powerful adaptation of O’Neill’s classic reaches new audiences who can appreciate the performances of Loren and Perkins and the film’s exploration of timeless themes of greed, desire, and family conflict.
