Plot Summary

Longfellow Deeds (Gary Cooper), a humble tuba-playing greeting card poet from Mandrake Falls, Vermont, inherits twenty million dollars from a distant uncle he barely knew. Thrust overnight into the glaring spotlight of New York City, the guileless and good-natured Deeds becomes the immediate target of scheming lawyers who want to manage his fortune, phony relatives who claim a share, and society predators all eager to separate him from his inheritance. His own attorney, the oily John Cedar (Douglass Dumbrille), secretly plots to embezzle the entire estate through a fraudulent power-of-attorney scheme.

Newspaper reporter Babe Bennett (Jean Arthur) poses as a penniless, fainting damsel in distress to get close to Deeds and write sensational front-page stories mocking his small-town ways and naive behavior in the big city. Her columns dubbing him “The Cinderella Man” make him a laughingstock across New York. But as Babe spends more time with Deeds and witnesses his genuine kindness, his unpretentious honesty, and his sincere desire to use his wealth for good, she finds herself falling helplessly in love with the very man she has been cruelly ridiculing in print. When a desperate Depression-era farmer confronts Deeds with a loaded gun, begging for help feeding his starving family, Deeds is deeply moved and decides to give away his entire fortune to purchase farms and equipment for thousands of unemployed men. His greedy opponents, terrified of losing the money they had planned to steal, have him declared legally insane and drag him into a dramatic sanity hearing where Deeds initially refuses to defend himself. This classic movie builds to a rousing courtroom climax where common decency faces off against cynicism and greed, and the ordinary people of America rally behind the man they once mocked.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

This colorized version of Mr. Deeds Goes to Town reveals the contrast between small-town Vermont and bustling New York City with beautiful new visual warmth. The original black and white photography captured Capra’s populist vision perfectly, but the professionally colorized restoration brings out the pastoral green countryside of Mandrake Falls, the imposing marble halls of the inherited mansion, the warm wood paneling of the courtroom, and the grey, rain-soaked streets of Depression-era Manhattan with frame-by-frame precision. Gary Cooper’s expressive face and Jean Arthur’s luminous beauty gain wonderful new dimension in color, and the contrast between Deeds’ humble small-town wardrobe and the sleek sophistication of New York society is visually striking. Historical Significance

Mr. Deeds Goes to Town won Frank Capra the Academy Award for Best Director and earned Gary Cooper his first Oscar nomination, launching the actor into the pantheon of American cinema’s greatest leading men. The film established the template for the “Capra-corn” populist comedy that would define the director’s career, celebrating the common man’s innate decency against powerful, corrupt forces — a theme Capra would revisit in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It’s a Wonderful Life. The term “pixilated,” used by two elderly sisters to describe eccentric behavior in the film’s famous courtroom scene, entered common American usage thanks to this movie. Based on the short story “Opera Hat” by Clarence Budington Kelland, the film was Columbia Pictures’ biggest hit of the year and cemented Jean Arthur’s status as one of Hollywood’s finest comedic actresses. The colorization process brings a fresh visual dimension to this essential piece of American cinema.
