Plot Summary
When a U.S. senator from an unnamed western state dies unexpectedly, the corrupt political machine led by ruthless media mogul Jim Taylor (Edward Arnold) arranges for the appointment of Jefferson Smith (James Stewart), the naive and earnest leader of the Boy Rangers, believing the wide-eyed young patriot will be easy to manipulate and control. Smith arrives in Washington full of patriotic idealism, touring the Lincoln Memorial with tears in his eyes and marveling at the Capitol dome. He is guided by his deeply cynical but secretly idealistic secretary Clarissa Saunders (Jean Arthur), who has seen too many politicians corrupted to believe in any of them, and is mentored by the seemingly honorable senior Senator Joseph Paine (Claude Rains), his late father’s best friend and a man Smith has idolized since childhood.
When Smith innocently proposes a bill to build a national boys’ camp on a plot of land in his home state, he unknowingly steps on a massive graft scheme — the same land has been secretly earmarked for a corrupt dam project that will make Taylor and his cronies millions. The political machine moves swiftly to destroy Smith with fabricated evidence of financial fraud, forged documents, and a coordinated media campaign that brands him a liar and a crook. Betrayed by his hero Senator Paine, abandoned by the press, and facing certain expulsion from the Senate, Smith launches a desperate one-man filibuster on the Senate floor. Speaking for nearly twenty-four hours without rest, his voice cracking and his body failing, Smith appeals to the conscience of the nation while Saunders and his loyal Boy Rangers fight to get the truth past Taylor’s media blackout back home. This classic movie builds to one of cinema’s most emotionally powerful climaxes as one honest man’s voice challenges an entire corrupt system.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
This colorized version of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington reveals the grandeur of the U.S. Capitol, the Senate chamber, and the Washington Monument with majestic new visual detail. The original black and white cinematography captured the drama brilliantly, but the professionally colorized restoration brings out the white marble halls of the Capitol, the rich wood tones of the Senate chamber, the red, white and blue of the American flags, and the emotional intensity of James Stewart’s legendary performance with frame-by-frame precision. The Lincoln Memorial scene glows with new warmth, and the exhausting filibuster sequence — with Stewart’s increasingly disheveled appearance and hoarse voice — gains powerful visual impact in color. Watch this restored classic film in the patriotic colors it deserves. Now also available in colour.

Historical Significance
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and won for Best Original Story by Lewis R. Foster. James Stewart’s performance as Jefferson Smith defined the archetype of the honest American everyman standing against powerful, entrenched interests — a role that earned him his first Oscar nomination and catapulted him to superstardom. Claude Rains delivered a masterful supporting performance as the compromised Senator Paine, torn between loyalty to his corrupt sponsors and the memory of his idealistic youth. The film was initially controversial upon its Washington premiere — sitting senators walked out in anger, the Ambassador from Nazi Germany denounced it, and several nations banned it as dangerous propaganda for democracy. Yet it has since been recognized as one of the greatest and most important films ever made, consistently appearing on the American Film Institute’s top lists. It was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 1989. The colorization process brings fresh visual power to this essential piece of American cinema.
