Plot Summary
Professor Isak Borg (Victor Sjöström) is seventy-eight years old, a retired physician of considerable distinction who is about to receive an honorary doctorate from Lund University in recognition of his fifty years of medical service. He lives alone in his large Stockholm house, cared for by his loyal but sharp-tongued housekeeper. His wife is long dead, his only son Evald (Gunnar Björnstrand) is distant and unhappy, and Borg has gradually retreated into a comfortable but emotionally frozen existence.
The night before the ceremony, Borg has a terrifying nightmare — he wanders through deserted streets, encounters a faceless clock with no hands, sees his own corpse in a coffin, and feels the ground beneath him give way. Shaken, he decides to drive to Lund instead of flying, and his daughter-in-law Marianne (Ingrid Thulin), who has been visiting and is returning south, accompanies him.
During the long drive, Borg makes a detour to visit the summer house where he spent his childhood holidays. Standing among the wild strawberry patches where he once played, he is transported back in time through vivid memories and waking dreams. He sees his beloved cousin Sara (Bibi Andersson) as she was at nineteen — the girl he loved who married his brother instead. He relives moments of youthful happiness and warmth, and sees with painful clarity how his own emotional reserve cost him the love that might have given his life a different direction.
Along the road, Borg and Marianne pick up three young hitchhikers, including a girl also named Sara who resembles Borg’s childhood love. They encounter a bitterly quarrelling married couple whose savage hostility shocks them all. Marianne reveals that she and Evald are themselves on the verge of separation — Evald has told her he does not want the child she is carrying because he sees life as meaningless suffering. Borg gradually realises that his own emotional coldness has been passed down to his son, perpetuating a cycle of isolation and unhappiness. Through the day’s encounters, the dreams and memories, and the warmth of the young people who briefly enter his life, Borg begins a tentative journey toward emotional connection and self-understanding — perhaps too late, but not without hope.

Historical Significance
Wild Strawberries is universally recognised as one of the supreme achievements of world cinema, a film that profoundly influenced generations of filmmakers including Woody Allen, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Wim Wenders. Ingmar Bergman wrote the screenplay during a period of intense personal reflection, drawing on his own complicated relationship with his father. The casting of Victor Sjöström, who had directed Bergman’s idol Stiller and was a titan of silent-era Swedish cinema, created a powerful meta-textual resonance — an old master of cinema playing an old man looking back on his life. The film won the Golden Bear at the 1958 Berlin Film Festival and has consistently appeared on every major list of the greatest films in history. Through colorization, this towering masterpiece has been preserved for modern audiences in a luminous new visual presentation.
