Plot Summary

Jim Scott (William Lundigan) returns home from a long stretch of military service overseas, eager to rebuild his civilian life, reclaim his marriage, and settle into the comfortable, productive, thoroughly normal domestic existence that sustained him through the long, lonely months of duty abroad. What awaits him is something considerably less comfortable, less productive, and far less normal than anything he imagined. His wife Connie (June Haver), driven by restless energy, romantic optimism, and a financial audacity that Jim finds equal parts admirable and terrifying, has invested their entire savings — every dollar they possess in the world — in a crumbling, decrepit Manhattan apartment building that she is absolutely convinced will make them rich. The building is a spectacular money pit of peeling wallpaper, broken plumbing, faulty wiring, and leaky roofs, populated by a collection of eccentric, perpetually rent-delinquent tenants who are always behind on their payments, always full of complaints and demands, and always available to offer unsolicited advice on how Jim should be running the building, managing his marriage, and conducting his life.
