Plot Summary

A group of wealthy, carefree socialites wake up after a spectacularly wild party with pounding headaches, scattered memories, and absolutely no recollection of what happened after the champagne started flowing the previous evening. Their bleary-eyed amusement at their own excess turns to genuine horror when they discover that one of their friends — a fellow member of their elite social circle — was murdered during the night, and not a single one of them can remember anything useful about the crime.

As heavyweight police detective Danny Harrison, played with gruff authority by Edward Arnold, begins his investigation, every guest at the party becomes a potential suspect. The problem is that the suspects are all so rich, so charming, and so accustomed to having their way that the investigation quickly becomes a circus of contradictory alibis, convenient amnesia, and aristocratic obstructionism. The hosts of the fatal party, Tony and Carlotta Milburn, played with breezy sophistication by Robert Young and Constance Cummings, take it upon themselves to solve the mystery, treating the murder investigation with the same lighthearted enthusiasm they bring to their cocktail parties.

Tony and Carlotta’s attempts to reconstruct the evening through fragmented memories, overheard conversations, and contradictory accounts from servants and guests produce a bewildering tangle of clues that only deepen the mystery. When a psychologist is brought in to use hypnosis to recover the partygoers’ lost memories, the technique proves dangerously effective — the recovered memories reveal embarrassing secrets and hidden motives, but they also make the hypnotist a target. When another person is killed, the stakes escalate from society scandal to genuine mortal danger, and Tony and Carlotta must solve the puzzle before the murderer silences anyone else who might remember too much about what really happened that night.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

Remember Last Night? was originally filmed in stylish black and white that suited its blend of art deco opulence and dark comedy. This professionally colorized restoration enhances every scene with frame-by-frame precision, from the lavish party settings drenched in prohibition-era glamour to the sleek cocktail gowns, gleaming automobiles, and ornate interiors that defined the lifestyle of the wealthy elite in 1930s America. The art deco design that James Whale brought to every production gains particular visual impact in color, with polished chrome, colored glass, and geometric patterns creating a world of dazzling superficial beauty that conceals the darker currents running beneath the surface. The moody investigation sequences benefit from warmer tones that bring depth to the shadow-filled rooms where secrets are slowly revealed. The colorized version brings sparkling new life to this restored classic film. Now also available in colour.

Historical Significance

Directed by James Whale, best known for his immortal horror classics Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, and The Invisible Man, Remember Last Night? showcased Whale’s remarkable versatility as a filmmaker who could work brilliantly in any genre. The film occupies a fascinating place in 1930s Hollywood, combining the witty, cocktail-fueled sophistication of the Thin Man series with a genuine murder mystery that has real consequences. Whale brought his signature visual flair and dark humor to the material, creating set pieces that are both genuinely funny and genuinely unsettling. Robert Young and Constance Cummings make an appealing amateur detective couple, and Edward Arnold’s frustrated detective provides an earthy counterpoint to their breezy privilege. The film’s satirical edge — its wealthy characters are so insulated by money that even murder barely disrupts their social calendar — gives it a sharp modern quality that resonates with contemporary audiences. Sally Eilers and Robert Armstrong add strong supporting performances, and the ensemble’s chemistry makes the mystery’s unraveling as entertaining as the comedy that surrounds it. Through colorization, this overlooked gem from Hollywood’s golden age finds new admirers who can appreciate its unique tonal balancing act.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Movie-Specific Questions

Q: Is this connected to the Frankenstein films?
A: Only through director James Whale, who was simultaneously famous for his landmark horror films. This is a very different genre — a sophisticated comedy-mystery that demonstrates Whale’s range as a director far beyond the horror films for which he is best remembered.

Q: Is this a screwball comedy or a mystery?
A: It brilliantly blends both genres, starting as a lighthearted comedy about wealthy partygoers nursing hangovers before gradually turning into a genuine murder mystery with real stakes, real danger, and a satisfyingly clever solution.

Q: How does this compare to The Thin Man?
A: The Thin Man, released the year before, clearly influenced this film’s blend of cocktail-hour wit and murder investigation. While Remember Last Night? lacks the iconic chemistry of William Powell and Myrna Loy, it compensates with James Whale’s visual inventiveness and a darker satirical edge.
