Plot Summary
Grant Matthews is a successful industrialist and idealistic Republican who is persuaded to run for President of the United States by Kay Thorndyke, a powerful newspaper magnate who also happens to be his secret mistress. Kay sees Grant as the perfect candidate — handsome, successful, and sufficiently pliable to serve her political interests. But to present the image of a wholesome family man required for a presidential campaign, Grant must reconcile with his estranged wife Mary, who has been living apart from him and knows nothing of his political ambitions or his affair. Mary reluctantly agrees to support the campaign for the sake of their children, but she quickly realizes that the idealistic principles Grant espouses on the campaign trail are being systematically compromised behind closed doors by corrupt political operatives, special interest groups, and Kay’s own manipulative agenda. As Grant travels the country making speeches about honesty, integrity, and the common good, he finds himself saying what handlers and power brokers want to hear rather than what he genuinely believes, and the gap between his public image and private reality grows wider with every rally. Mary watches with mounting dismay as the man she married — the honest, principled idealist she once loved — disappears into a carefully managed political persona crafted by consultants and compromised by deals. The tension between Grant, Mary, and Kay builds to an explosive climax when Grant must choose between winning the presidency through deception or losing everything with his integrity intact, in a final speech that tears down the entire edifice of lies. This classic movie is a sharp, prescient political satire that remains remarkably relevant to modern American politics.
Cast & Crew
Director: Frank Capra
Stars: Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Angela Lansbury, Van Johnson, Adolphe Menjou, Lewis Stone, Margaret Hamilton, Charles Dingle, Howard Smith, Charles Lane
Spencer Tracy delivers a masterful performance as Grant Matthews, capturing the gradual moral erosion of an honest man seduced by political power with characteristic honesty and restraint. Katharine Hepburn is magnificent as Mary, bringing fierce intelligence, dry wit, and devastating emotional clarity to a woman who sees through every pretense and loves her husband too much to let him destroy himself. Angela Lansbury is chillingly effective as Kay Thorndyke, creating a power-hungry manipulator whose intelligence and ambition make her a formidable antagonist. Adolphe Menjou is perfectly cast as the cynical political operator, and Van Johnson provides appealing support.

Historical Significance
State of the Union reunited Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn in one of their finest screen pairings, and marked Frank Capra’s return to the sharp political filmmaking that had defined his career with Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. The original play by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and Capra’s film adaptation preserves its intelligence while adding cinematic scope. The film remains one of the most perceptive and entertaining political satires Hollywood has ever produced, with its themes of media manipulation, political compromise, and the tension between authenticity and electability remaining strikingly relevant. Angela Lansbury’s early performance foreshadowed her later brilliance in The Manchurian Candidate. Through colorization, Capra’s timeless commentary on American politics reaches new audiences.
