Plot Summary

Pete Johnson (Bud Abbott) and Harvey Garvey (Lou Costello) are two hapless American entertainers performing with a traveling variety show that has been working its way through the exotic bazaars, dusty caravan routes, and fly-blown oasis towns of a fictional Middle Eastern kingdom with declining audiences and ever-diminishing paychecks. When their show finally goes completely bust and strands them without money, transportation, or prospects in a land where they don’t speak the language and have no idea how anything works, the duo stumbles spectacularly into a full-blown palace revolution. The tyrannical, magnificently villainous Prince Dodd (Douglass Dumbrille) has overthrown the rightful king and imprisoned a beautiful American singer named Hazel (Marilyn Maxwell) in his opulently guarded harem, intending to make her his latest unwilling bride. Pete and Harvey, through a combination of outrageous luck, spectacular incompetence, and the accidental acquisition of a pair of genuinely powerful magic hypnotic rings, find themselves cast as the unlikely heroes of a resistance movement they barely understand. Harvey’s attempts to use the rings go wrong in every conceivable way — he hypnotizes the wrong people at the worst possible moments, accidentally convinces palace guards they are chickens, puts himself into trances he cannot escape from, and creates cascading disasters of misidentification, confusion, and slapstick chaos that would be catastrophic if they weren’t so hilarious. Pete’s increasingly frantic schemes to rescue Hazel, restore the rightful king, and escape with their lives intact are systematically sabotaged by Harvey’s gift for turning every plan into spectacular pandemonium. As they navigate increasingly absurd encounters in the labyrinthine palace’s secret passages, trap-filled throne rooms, treasure vaults, and the heavily guarded harem itself, the duo must somehow outwit a villain with an entire army at his command using nothing but quick wits, dumb luck, and magic rings that work about half the time. This classic movie delivers relentless, brilliantly timed comedy in the finest Abbott and Costello tradition.
