Plot Summary
Mary Clay (Joan Crawford) has been in love with her childhood friend Dill (Robert Montgomery) for as long as she can remember. Their social circle takes it for granted that the two will eventually marry, and Mary has quietly built her emotional life around that assumption. When Dill abruptly announces he is marrying another woman, the glamorous Connie Barnes (Frances Drake), Mary is blindsided by a betrayal she never saw coming.
Devastated but determined not to collapse, Mary throws herself into the arms of the charming and steadfast Jeff Williams (Clark Gable), who has quietly harbored deep feelings for her all along. Jeff is everything Dill is not — reliable, genuinely devoted, and willing to wait for Mary to see what has been obvious to everyone else for years. Their budding romance brings warmth and humor to a story that could have become simply bitter.
But when Dill’s hasty marriage unravels almost immediately — Connie proves to be far less enchanting as a wife than she was as a fiancée — he comes rushing back to Mary, disrupting her new happiness with Jeff and throwing everyone’s plans into delightful chaos. The film follows the three friends through misunderstandings, comic mishaps involving muddy roads and weekend retreats, and genuinely touching emotional moments as Mary must finally choose between the man who always took her for granted and the man who has always truly seen her worth.
Supported by the wonderfully daffy Aunt Paula (Billie Burke) and Dill’s hapless friend Shemp (Charles Butterworth), the film balances wit, physical comedy, and emotional tenderness with the ease that only golden-age Hollywood could achieve.

The professionally restored colorized version brings the elegant MGM costumes, fashionable interiors, and sparkling social settings of 1930s New York to life in warm, period-accurate hues. This frame-by-frame restoration preserves every detail of the original cinematography while adding historically researched color that deepens the visual contrast between the world of high society glamour and the comic chaos of romantic misadventure.
This classic movie is also available in colour for international audiences.
Historical Significance
Released in late 1934, Forsaking All Others arrived as Hollywood’s Production Code was beginning to enforce stricter content standards. The film represents one of the last examples of the witty, sophisticated pre-Code romantic comedy style before studios were required to sanitize their output more aggressively. Seeing Crawford, Gable, and Montgomery together — three stars at the absolute height of their box-office power — makes it a genuinely rare document of Hollywood’s most glamorous era. Director W.S. Van Dyke, known for his efficient one-take style that earned him the nickname “One-Take Woody,” keeps the pace nimble and the comedy sharp throughout. The early appearance of Rosalind Russell in a small role adds further historical interest for fans tracking the careers of Hollywood’s golden generation.
