Plot Summary

Jim Garry is a wandering cowhand who arrives in a remote cattle country at the summons of his old friend Tate Riling. The region is consumed by a bitter conflict between established ranchers and homesteaders who have been granted government contracts to purchase cattle from the locals. Tensions run dangerously high, with both sides armed and suspicious, and violence seems inevitable.

Tate has a scheme to profit from the conflict by manipulating both sides, and he wants Jim’s help to pull it off. The plan involves driving the cattle prices down by terrorising the homesteaders, then buying the government contracts at a fraction of their true value. It is ruthless, illegal, and potentially very profitable, and Tate assumes that Jim’s loyalty and pragmatism will make him a willing participant.

Jim begins to carry out Tate’s instructions, but his involvement brings him into contact with Amy Lufton, the strong-willed daughter of the cattle baron whose family stands to lose everything if Tate’s scheme succeeds. Amy challenges Jim’s easy cynicism and forces him to see the human cost of the conspiracy he has joined. Her integrity and courage awaken something in Jim that he thought was dead — a conscience and a sense of honour.

As Jim’s loyalties shift, he finds himself caught between his former friend’s increasingly dangerous plans and his growing determination to do the right thing.
