Plot Summary
Ed Crane is a barber in a small California town in 1949, a quiet, unremarkable man who seems to float through life without leaving any impression on it. He cuts hair in his brother-in-law’s shop, goes home to his wife Doris, smokes incessantly, and says as little as possible. Ed suspects that Doris is having an affair with her boss Big Dave Brewster, but being Ed, he says nothing about it and simply observes the situation with his characteristic detachment.
Ed’s passive existence changes when a fast-talking entrepreneur named Creighton Tolliver approaches him in the barber shop with a business proposition involving something called dry cleaning. Seeing an opportunity to transform his forgettable life, Ed decides to raise the investment capital through an anonymous blackmail letter to Big Dave, threatening to expose his affair with Doris. The plan is elegant in its simplicity, and for once in his life, Ed takes decisive action.
The blackmail succeeds, but from that point everything spirals catastrophically out of control. Big Dave discovers the identity of his blackmailer, a confrontation turns violent, and suddenly Ed is dealing with far more serious consequences than he ever imagined. When Doris is arrested for a crime she did not commit, Ed finds himself trapped in a web of guilt, deception, and legal jeopardy that his laconic nature is entirely unequipped to navigate.
As events continue their inexorable downward spiral, Ed engages a legendary defence attorney and develops an unlikely attachment to a young piano prodigy named Birdy, in whom he sees the artistic potential that his own colourless life has lacked. The film builds toward a devastating conclusion that is both darkly comic and profoundly fatalistic, a meditation on the impossibility of controlling consequences and the cosmic irony that pursues ordinary men who dare to reach beyond their station. Roger Deakins’s cinematography creates images of haunting beauty throughout.
