Plot Summary

Mal Granger (Edmond O’Brien) is a talented telephone-exchange technician who earns a modest salary maintaining the intricate wiring systems that connect calls across the city. Intelligent, ambitious, and frustrated by his limited prospects, Granger is approached by a local bookmaker who recognises that the technician’s expertise could revolutionise the gambling business: by tapping into the wire services that carry horse-racing results, Granger can ensure that the bookmaker receives results before the general public — giving the operation an unbeatable edge.

Granter builds a sophisticated electronic system that intercepts and reroutes the racing-wire signals, creating a network that allows the bookmaking operation to expand from a local business to a regional enterprise. The money flows in — and Granger, who has been living modestly for years, is intoxicated by the sudden wealth and the power that comes with it. He moves up rapidly, eliminating his local boss and taking over the operation himself.

But success attracts attention. The national crime syndicate — the shadowy organisation that controls organised gambling across the country — takes notice of Granger’s operation. They want in. More than that, they want control. The syndicate sends their representatives to make Granger an offer he cannot refuse: merge his operation with theirs, take a percentage, and submit to their authority. The alternative, as the syndicate’s enforcers make coldly clear, is elimination.

Granger, who has developed a taste for independence along with his taste for wealth, resists — and the consequences are immediate and violent. The syndicate begins systematically destroying his operation, threatening his associates, and closing in on Granger himself. The climax unfolds in a spectacular chase across the Hoover Dam and its surrounding desert landscape, as Granger makes his last desperate attempt to escape the forces he has unleashed.

Historical Significance

711 Ocean Drive was one of the most controversial crime films of 1950, arriving at a time when the Kefauver Committee was conducting its landmark investigation into organised crime in America. The film’s realistic depiction of the wire-service gambling operation — showing in detail how telephone technology was exploited to create a nationwide criminal enterprise — was so accurate that the real-life crime syndicate reportedly attempted to have the production shut down. The studio received threats, and the film’s ending was reportedly altered under pressure. Director Joseph M. Newman’s semi-documentary approach, influenced by the success of The Naked City and similar location-shot crime films, gives the picture an authenticity that elevates it far above the typical crime programmer of the era. Through colorization, this powerful crime thriller has been preserved for modern audiences.
