Plot Summary

A magnificent diamond of extraordinary value is stolen in a daring theft, and the man who took it — Sam Carter (Jack Palance) — disappears into the labyrinth of European cities with the precious gem. Carter is no ordinary thief; he is intelligent, resourceful, and desperate, a man whose motives for the theft go deeper than simple greed. The diamond represents his chance at a new life, and he will stop at nothing to keep it.

Milo March (Nigel Patrick), a private investigator working for the insurance company that covered the stolen gem, is assigned to track Carter down and recover the diamond. March is a sophisticated, experienced operative who knows the European underworld and its connections, and he follows Carter’s trail from London through Paris and on to the sun-drenched cities of Southern Europe, always one step behind his quarry.

The chase is complicated by the involvement of Trudy (Anita Ekberg), a beautiful woman connected to Carter whose loyalties remain ambiguous throughout. She may be helping Carter evade pursuit, she may be an innocent caught up in events beyond her control, or she may have her own designs on the diamond. March must navigate his growing attraction to Trudy while maintaining his professional focus on recovering the gem.

As the pursuit crosses borders, Carter finds that keeping his stolen treasure is far more dangerous than taking it. Other criminals have learned about the diamond and want it for themselves, and the European underworld closes in from multiple directions. The detective, the thief, and the woman find themselves converging on a climactic confrontation in which the diamond’s ultimate fate will be decided. The international locations provide a stunning backdrop to a story of obsession, pursuit, and the question of whether any prize is worth the price of a life spent running.
