Plot Summary
Eddie Pedak (Alain Delon) has served his time in prison and is trying to build an honest new life in San Francisco with his devoted wife Kristine (Ann-Margret) and their young daughter. He works a legitimate job at a trucking company, keeps his head down, and wants nothing more than to leave his criminal past permanently behind. But two implacable forces conspire to drag him back into the darkness he fought so hard to escape.
Inspector Mike Vido (Van Heflin) is a relentless, obsessive cop who busted Eddie years ago and refuses to believe that any criminal can truly reform. Vido harasses Eddie constantly — showing up at his workplace to question his employers, following him through the streets, and making thinly veiled threats that poison Eddie’s reputation and jeopardize his fragile new stability. When Vido contacts Eddie’s boss and reveals his criminal record, Eddie loses his job, and Kristine watches helplessly as her husband’s carefully rebuilt life begins to crumble under the weight of a past he cannot erase.
Meanwhile, Eddie’s brother Walter (Jack Palance), a cold and dangerous career criminal still deep in the San Francisco underworld, pressures Eddie to join one last big heist — a lucrative job that could set them up for life. Walter dismisses Eddie’s desire to go straight as naive self-delusion and applies increasing pressure, making it clear that family loyalty demands compliance. Tony Musante appears as a volatile member of Walter’s crew who views Eddie’s hesitation with contempt and suspicion.
Caught between a detective who will never let him forget his past and a brother who won’t accept his future, Eddie watches his options narrow day by day. Kristine’s faith in him is tested as bill collectors appear and the apartment grows cold. When Vido’s relentless persecution costs Eddie another job and landlords refuse to rent to an ex-con, desperation begins to erode the resolve that kept Eddie on the straight path. The question that drives the film to its devastating conclusion is whether society will ever truly let a man pay his debt — or whether the label of criminal is a life sentence no parole can end. This classic movie is a powerful, socially conscious exploration of justice, redemption, and the crushing machinery of a system designed to keep men trapped.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
This colorized version of Once a Thief reveals the iconic San Francisco landscape with vivid atmospheric detail. The hilly streets and Victorian houses take on their characteristic pastels — cream, pale blue, and weathered pink facades climbing steeply toward foggy hilltops. The waterfront warehouses where Walter’s criminal operations unfold loom in dark industrial grays and rusted browns, lit by harsh sodium vapor lamps that cast long shadows across wet concrete. Eddie and Kristine’s modest apartment gains a warm, lived-in quality with faded curtains and secondhand furniture that tells the story of a family rebuilding on almost nothing. The fog-shrouded nighttime scenes where Eddie is followed and confronted gain a cold, blue-gray menace that makes the city itself feel threatening. Ann-Margret’s beauty and natural warmth shine in color, her red hair and vivid presence grounding the film’s emotional core. The original black and white film captured the urban tension brilliantly, and the professionally colorized restoration brings the fog-shrouded city, the domestic warmth, and the dangerous nighttime encounters to life with frame-by-frame precision. Watch this restored classic film in stunning, dramatic color. Now also available in colour.

Historical Significance
Once a Thief features French star Alain Delon in one of his rare American productions, bringing his European cool and soulful intensity to a San Francisco crime story. At the time, Delon was one of the biggest stars in world cinema, fresh from triumphs in Plein Soleil and The Leopard, and his casting opposite the glamorous Ann-Margret at the height of her career created an unusually international flavor for an American thriller. Van Heflin delivers a chilling, morally complex performance as the vindictive detective Vido, a man whose obsession with “justice” has curdled into something indistinguishable from persecution. Jack Palance brings his characteristic menace to the criminal brother Walter, whose casual violence contrasts starkly with Eddie’s desperate desire for normalcy. Director Ralph Nelson, fresh from his Academy Award success with Lilies of the Field, crafted a socially conscious thriller that questions whether the American criminal justice system is designed for rehabilitation or permanent punishment. The film was shot on location in San Francisco, and the city’s distinctive geography becomes an integral part of the story. The colorization adds striking visual depth to this underrated crime drama.
