Plot Summary
England, 1585. King Philip II of Spain is assembling the greatest naval force in history to invade England and destroy the Protestant nation. Queen Elizabeth (Flora Robson), aware of the threat but unable to fund an adequate navy, relies on her ‘Sea Hawks’ — daring English privateers who raid Spanish treasure ships, disrupting Philip’s war preparations while enriching the English crown.
Captain Geoffrey Thorpe (Errol Flynn) is the boldest and most successful of the Sea Hawks. He captures a Spanish galleon carrying the new Spanish Ambassador Don José Álvarez de Córdoba (Claude Rains) and his beautiful niece Doña Maria (Brenda Marshall). Thorpe’s gallantry toward his captives — and particularly toward the fiery Doña Maria — spark a complicated romance across enemy lines.
Thorpe proposes a daring plan to the Queen: sail to Panama and seize a Spanish treasure caravan, crippling Philip’s invasion fund. Elizabeth secretly approves, but the treacherous Lord Doña Maria’s uncle, working as Philip’s agent in the English court, learns of the plan and arranges for the Spanish to ambush Thorpe in the jungle. The expedition ends in disaster — Thorpe and his crew are captured and condemned to the living death of the Spanish galley ships, chained to their oars under the burning sun. The spectacular escape sequence that follows — and the climactic sword fight in the darkened halls of the English court — are among the greatest action sequences in cinema history.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Movie-Specific Questions
Q: Is this the same as the 1924 version?
A: No — the 1940 film is an entirely new story loosely inspired by the same source. It uses the Elizabethan privateering setting but tells an original tale that doubles as a wartime allegory about resistance to tyranny.
Q: Is this one of Errol Flynn’s best films?
A: Many consider it his finest — the combination of spectacular action, romantic charm, and patriotic idealism plays to every one of Flynn’s extraordinary strengths as a performer and screen presence.
Q: Was this a wartime propaganda film?
A: Yes, subtly — released in 1940 with Britain standing alone against Nazi Germany, Elizabeth’s England defending itself against Spanish invasion was a clear and deliberate parallel that wartime audiences readily understood.
