Plot Summary

Don Diego Vega returns to Spanish California after years of education in Madrid, expecting to find the cultured, peaceful community he remembers from childhood. Instead, he discovers that his father, the former alcalde Don Alejandro, has been forced from office by the scheming Luis Quintero, who exploits the local population through excessive taxation, forced labour, and casual brutality.
