Plot Summary

Rudolf Rassendyll (Ronald Colman), a debonair English gentleman, travels to the small European kingdom of Ruritania for a fishing holiday. He is amused to learn that the royal family shares his distinctive red hair and Anglo-Saxon features — a legacy of an ancient romantic connection between the families. When he encounters King Rudolf V (also Ronald Colman), the resemblance is staggering: they are virtually identical.

On the eve of the coronation, the treacherous Duke Michael (Raymond Massey), who covets the throne, has the King drugged and imprisoned in the Castle of Zenda. Unable to appear at his own coronation, the King’s loyal aide Colonel Zapt (C. Aubrey Smith) conceives a desperate plan: Rudolf Rassendyll will impersonate the King through the coronation ceremony and maintain the deception until the real King can be rescued.

Rudolf agrees and carries off the impersonation brilliantly — too brilliantly, in fact.
