Plot Summary
The Ambersons are the grandest and wealthiest family in their prosperous Midwestern city at the turn of the twentieth century. Their magnificent mansion dominates the town, their lavish parties are the social events of the season, and their name commands universal respect and envy. Into this gilded world, young George Amberson Minafer (Tim Holt) is born β the pampered, arrogant, insufferably spoiled heir to the family fortune, raised to believe that the Amberson name places him above the ordinary concerns of common people.
But the world is changing. Eugene Morgan (Joseph Cotten), a charming, visionary inventor, returns to town after years away. Eugene was once in love with George’s beautiful mother, Isabel (Dolores Costello), but lost her when he disgraced himself years ago. Now a successful automobile manufacturer, Eugene represents everything the future holds β industry, progress, the destruction of the old aristocratic order. When the widowed Isabel and Eugene rekindle their tender romance, George is consumed with jealous fury. He cannot bear to see his sainted mother with a man he considers beneath the Amberson dignity.
George’s cruel, selfish campaign to keep his mother and Eugene apart succeeds β but at a devastating cost. Isabel wastes away from heartbreak and dies, the Amberson fortune evaporates as the modern world they refused to adapt to overwhelms them, and the magnificent mansion that symbolized their dynasty becomes a decaying relic surrounded by factories and automobile traffic. George’s Aunt Fanny (Agnes Moorehead), who has silently loved Eugene for decades, is driven to the edge of madness by her losses. George himself is finally humbled by poverty and injury, forced to confront the consequences of his monstrous pride in a denouement of painful, bittersweet recognition.

Historical Significance
Released in 1942, The Magnificent Ambersons was Orson Welles’s follow-up to Citizen Kane and is considered by many critics to be equally brilliant. The studio infamously cut approximately fifty minutes and reshot the ending against Welles’s wishes, yet even in its truncated form the film remains a towering achievement. It earned four Academy Award nominations, and Agnes Moorehead’s performance is ranked among the greatest in cinema history. Through colorization, this essential American masterpiece is preserved for modern audiences.
