Plot Summary

Arizona Territory, the 1860s. The uneasy peace between the American settlers and the Apache nation is maintained through a government Indian agency that is supposed to protect Apache rights while managing the complicated relationship between two cultures that want the same land. In practice, the agency is run by Tom Doyle (Dean Jagger), a smooth, ambitious man whose concern for the Apache people extends exactly as far as his personal profit requires.

Jonathan Ware (James Craig) is a former government scout who lived among the Apache for years and developed genuine respect for their culture, their warriors, and their rights. He has been warning the authorities that Doyle’s corrupt management of the agency — cheating the Apache on supplies, stealing their annuities, and provoking confrontations to justify military action that would clear valuable land — is driving the territory toward a catastrophic war that will cost lives on both sides.

Ware’s warnings are ignored because Doyle has powerful political connections and because the prevailing attitude toward the Apache makes it easy to dismiss anyone who advocates for their fair treatment. When Ware takes direct action to expose Doyle’s corruption, he finds himself branded an outlaw — a white man who has “gone native” and whose loyalty to the Apache makes him a traitor in the eyes of the settler community.

Complicating everything is Christine (Lucille Ball), Doyle’s wife, a strong-willed and intelligent woman who is gradually discovering the truth about her husband’s criminal activities. Her growing attraction to Ware — and her recognition that he represents everything her husband pretends to be but is not — creates a romantic triangle that mirrors the larger conflict between honesty and corruption.

The situation explodes when Doyle’s provocations finally push the Apache leader Doyle to the breaking point and raids begin. Ware must use his unique position — trusted by both the Apache and the honest settlers — to prevent a full-scale war while exposing Doyle’s corruption and protecting the woman he has come to love.

Historical Significance

Valley of the Sun is notable for its relatively sympathetic portrayal of the Apache people, unusual for a 1942 Western. While the film necessarily reflects the attitudes of its era, its central message — that corruption and dishonesty by government officials, not the Apache people themselves, are the true cause of frontier violence — was progressive for its time. The film also showcases Lucille Ball in a rare dramatic Western role, reminding audiences of the genuine acting talent that would later be overshadowed by her enormous success in television comedy. Through colorization, this action-packed and surprisingly thoughtful Western has been preserved for modern audiences in a striking new visual presentation.
