Plot Summary

Orville J. Spooner is a piano teacher and aspiring songwriter in the tiny desert town of Climax, Nevada. When the famous singer Dino β€” a thinly veiled version of Dean Martin himself β€” is forced to detour through town after his car breaks down, Orville sees a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If he can get Dino to hear his songs, it could mean fame and fortune.

But there is a problem. Dino has an insatiable appetite for women, and Orville is pathologically jealous about his attractive wife Zelda. Terrified that Dino will seduce her, Orville concocts a scheme: he picks a fight with Zelda and throws her out of the house, then recruits Polly the Pistol β€” a good-hearted waitress from the local roadhouse β€” to pose as his wife for the evening.

The plan is simple: let Dino think he is charming Orville’s wife, keep him happy and in town long enough to listen to the songs, and everybody wins. But nothing goes according to plan. Polly and Orville develop genuine feelings for each other, Zelda ends up at the roadhouse where Dino has gone looking for entertainment, and the entire scheme spirals into a farcical tangle of mistaken identities, jealousy, and desire. This classic movie showcases Wilder’s gift for finding comedy in the most compromising situations.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

This professionally colorized and restored version brings fresh visual life to Wilder’s sharpest late-career comedy. The colorization process illuminates the sun-baked Nevada desert, the gaudy neon of the roadhouse, and the cozy clutter of the Spooner household in warm, period-accurate tones. Kim Novak’s sultry glamour and Dean Martin’s effortless cool are even more magnetic in color, while the visual contrast between the dusty small-town setting and the flashy world Dino represents adds another layer to the film’s comedy of cultural collision. Historical Significance

Kiss Me, Stupid was one of the most controversial films of the 1960s. Billy Wilder, already famous for pushing boundaries with Some Like It Hot and The Apartment, created a comedy so frank about sex and marital hypocrisy that the Catholic Legion of Decency condemned it and many theaters refused to show it. The film was originally intended to star Peter Sellers as Orville, but Sellers suffered a series of heart attacks during production and was replaced by Ray Walston. Dean Martin’s willingness to play a ruthless parody of his own playboy persona demonstrated a self-awareness that enriched the satire. Kim Novak delivered one of her most appealing performances as Polly, bringing genuine warmth to a role that could easily have been one-dimensional. Though savaged by American critics on release, the film was embraced in Europe and has since been recognized as a mordant and ahead-of-its-time comedy that anticipated the sexual frankness of the following decade.
