Plot Summary
New Orleans. Julian Berniers (Dean Martin) has always been the beloved, charming, hopelessly irresponsible younger brother — the golden boy who could never hold a job, never keep a promise, and never resist the next get-rich-quick scheme. His two unmarried sisters, Anna (Geraldine Page) and Carrie (Wendy Hiller), have spent their entire lives supporting, protecting, and making excuses for Julian, sacrificing their own chances at happiness to sustain the brother they adore.
But their devotion to Julian is not simple sisterly affection. Carrie’s love for her brother has curdled into something obsessive, possessive, and deeply unhealthy — a consuming emotional attachment that has prevented her from forming any other relationship and that demands Julian remain dependent on her forever. Anna, the more perceptive sister, recognises the destructive nature of Carrie’s fixation but is herself complicit in the family’s dysfunctional dynamic.
Julian returns home unexpectedly with two dramatic announcements: he has married a beautiful young woman named Lily (Yvette Mimieux), and he has suddenly come into a large sum of money through a business deal. For the first time in his life, Julian is independent — he can support himself, he does not need his sisters’ money or protection, and he has a wife who has replaced them as the centre of his emotional life.
Carrie’s reaction to this news is catastrophic. She cannot accept Julian’s independence, she cannot tolerate Lily’s existence, and she will not relinquish her hold on her brother without a fight. What follows is a battle of wills conducted through manipulation, emotional blackmail, and the weaponisation of family secrets.
Lily, meanwhile, is fragile, childlike, and deeply insecure — she loves Julian desperately but senses that she is fighting forces within his family that she cannot understand or defeat. As the household pressure builds to unbearable levels, secrets about Julian’s money, Carrie’s true feelings, and the family’s darkest history begin to surface, driving the story toward a devastating climax that strips away every pretence and reveals the toxic truth at the heart of the Berniers family.
Cast & Crew
Director: George Roy Hill
Stars: Dean Martin, Geraldine Page, Wendy Hiller, Yvette Mimieux, Gene Tierney, Frank Silvera
Dean Martin delivers one of the most surprising performances of his career — playing against his usual charming persona to reveal the weakness, self-deception, and genuine desperation beneath Julian’s surface charm. Geraldine Page is extraordinary as Carrie, creating a portrait of obsessive love that is simultaneously terrifying and pitiable. Wendy Hiller brings quiet dignity and painful awareness to the more self-aware Anna, and Yvette Mimieux is heartbreakingly vulnerable as the fragile Lily.

Historical Significance
Toys in the Attic brought one of Lillian Hellman’s most psychologically complex plays to the screen with an impressive cast and unflinching honesty. Hellman, already celebrated for The Little Foxes and The Children’s Hour, created in this work one of the most disturbing portraits of family dysfunction in American drama. The film was part of a wave of Southern Gothic adaptations in the early 1960s — including works by Tennessee Williams and William Faulkner — that brought the complexity and darkness of Southern literature to mainstream cinema. Dean Martin’s dramatic performance surprised critics and audiences, proving that the entertainer possessed genuine acting depth. Through colorization, this intense and brilliantly acted drama has been preserved for modern audiences in an atmospheric new visual presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Movie-Specific Questions
Q: Dean Martin in a serious drama?
A: Yes, and he is genuinely impressive. Martin strips away his familiar entertainer persona to reveal the damaged, self-deceiving man beneath Julian’s charm. Critics who dismissed him as merely a crooner were forced to recognise his genuine acting ability.
Q: Is this like Tennessee Williams?
A: Similar in setting and emotional intensity, though Lillian Hellman’s style is distinctly her own. Like Williams, Hellman uses the pressure-cooker atmosphere of the Deep South to expose family secrets and destructive passions, but her approach is more psychologically analytical than Williams’s poetic emotionalism.
Q: Is this a dark film?
A: Yes. The film deals with obsessive love, manipulation, jealousy, and family dysfunction with unflinching honesty. It is a rewarding but challenging viewing experience that does not shy away from the darker aspects of human relationships.
