Plot Summary

Mary Henry is riding in a car with two other young women when they are challenged to a drag race on a bridge. The car plunges off the bridge into the river below. Hours later, as police drag the river for the vehicle, Mary emerges from the water, dazed and unable to explain how she survived. The other two women are never found.

Determined to put the accident behind her, Mary accepts a position as a church organist in Salt Lake City, Utah, and drives across the country to start her new life. During the journey, she begins experiencing disturbing episodes — moments when she seems to become invisible and inaudible to the people around her, as though she has temporarily ceased to exist. She also catches glimpses of a ghastly pale-faced man who appears at her car window, in mirrors, and in shadows, watching her with hollow, dead eyes.

In Salt Lake City, Mary tries to establish a normal life, but the disturbances intensify. She becomes obsessed with an abandoned carnival pavilion on the shores of the Great Salt Lake, a decaying amusement park that calls to her with a power she cannot resist or explain. She experiences increasingly frequent episodes of disconnection from the world around her, losing the ability to be seen or heard by others, existing in a liminal state between presence and absence.

As Mary’s grip on reality loosens, the visions become more persistent and terrifying. The pale-faced man is joined by other ghoulish figures, and Mary sees them dancing in the abandoned pavilion in a macabre spectral carnival. She begins to understand, with growing horror, that she is not being haunted by the dead — she is being called home to join them. The film builds to one of the most chilling and psychologically devastating conclusions in horror cinema history.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

The colorization of Carnival of Souls adds dreamlike new dimensions to this horror masterpiece — the deathly white pallor of the ghoulish figures, the deep blue-black of night scenes that suggest a world between life and death, the sickly green of the abandoned carnival pavilion’s decaying walls, the cold grey of the Great Salt Lake stretching to an empty horizon, the warm amber of church interiors where Mary plays the organ, the brown and cream of 1960s motel rooms, the pale flesh tones of Mary’s increasingly ghostly appearance, the rust and weathered brown of abandoned carnival rides, the moonlit silver of the pavilion at night where the dead dance, and the vivid contrast between the warm living world and the cold spectral realm. Historical Significance

Carnival of Souls is one of the most influential and important horror films ever made, a micro-budget independent production that has profoundly shaped the genre. Made for approximately $33,000 by industrial filmmaker Herk Harvey, the film was largely ignored upon release but has since been recognized as a masterpiece of atmospheric horror whose influence extends from George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead to David Lynch’s entire filmography. The film’s dreamlike quality, its exploration of existential alienation, and its ambiguous narrative place it alongside the work of filmmakers like Bergman and Cocteau while remaining viscerally effective as horror. The abandoned Saltair pavilion on the Great Salt Lake provides one of cinema’s most evocative locations. Through colorization, this landmark of independent horror cinema is preserved for modern audiences.
