Plot Summary
Twenty years after being committed to an asylum for the brutal axe murder of her unfaithful husband and his young mistress — a crime committed in a blind rage that her three-year-old daughter Carol witnessed — Lucy Harbin is finally released from institutional care. Now middle-aged and fragile, desperately hoping for normalcy, Lucy is welcomed into the home of her brother Bill and his wife Emily, where the grown Carol has been living. Carol, now a beautiful young woman engaged to a wealthy young man from a prominent family, is determined to give her mother a fresh start and welcomes her with genuine warmth and love. But almost immediately after Lucy’s release, strange and terrifying things begin happening. Lucy seems drawn to axes, staring at them with unsettling intensity. She undergoes bizarre personality shifts, sometimes appearing decades younger and behaving with flirtatious abandon. Then the murders begin — decapitated heads appear, people connected to the family start dying in gruesome ways that mirror Lucy’s original crime with horrifying precision. As suspicion mounts and the body count rises, the question becomes increasingly urgent: has Lucy truly been cured during her twenty years of treatment, or has the murderous madness returned with a vengeance? Carol struggles desperately to defend her mother against growing evidence while grappling with her own traumatic childhood memories of that terrible night. The truth, when it finally emerges in a shocking climax, is far more twisted than anyone imagined. This classic movie is a deliciously shocking psychological thriller from the master of gimmick horror.

Historical Significance
Strait-Jacket was written by Robert Bloch, the author of the novel Psycho on which Hitchcock’s masterpiece was based, and directed by William Castle, the legendary showman who promoted the film by distributing cardboard axes to audience members at theater screenings. Joan Crawford delivers one of her most fearless late-career performances, channeling the gothic horror sensibility of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? into a Robert Bloch psycho-thriller that has become a beloved cult classic. The film features a young Lee Majors in one of his earliest screen roles, years before The Six Million Dollar Man made him a television icon. Castle’s promotional genius and Bloch’s twisted storytelling create a unique horror entertainment that continues to shock and delight audiences. Through colorization, this cult horror classic gains new visual intensity.
