Plot Summary

Helen Chernen (Ida Lupino) lives in a bleak Pennsylvania steel town, trapped in poverty and married to a man she despises. Her one light in this dreary existence is her beautiful, talented younger sister Katie (Joan Leslie), and Helen becomes obsessively determined that Katie will escape the dismal life that she herself endures. When a vaudeville comedy duo β€” the charming Albert Runkel (Dennis Morgan) and his wisecracking partner Paul Collins (Jack Carson) β€” passes through town, Helen seizes the opportunity with cold-blooded calculation.

Helen engineers Katie’s marriage to Albert, not for love but as a vehicle for Katie’s career advancement. She manipulates, cajoles, and bullies everyone around her, transforming Katie from a sweet small-town girl into a Broadway sensation. As Katie climbs the ladder of success β€” from small-time vaudeville to headlining Broadway shows β€” Helen’s controlling grip tightens. She breaks up Katie’s marriage when Albert becomes an obstacle to further advancement and pushes her sister into higher-profile relationships and roles.

But the cost of Helen’s obsessive management is devastating. Katie’s health deteriorates under the relentless pressure, her personal relationships are destroyed before they can develop, and the joy that once animated her performances drains away. Paul Collins, who genuinely loves Katie, watches helplessly as Helen’s ambition consumes both sisters. Even Albert, discarded by Helen’s machinations, descends into alcoholism and despair.

The tragedy deepens as Helen refuses to acknowledge the destruction she is causing, justifying everything as being “for Katie.” The film builds to a shattering climax in which the terrible price of Helen’s ambition is finally, irrevocably paid.
