Plot Summary
Young Philip Ashley (Richard Burton) has been raised by his beloved older cousin Ambrose on a grand estate perched on the windswept Cornish cliffs, the two men living a contented bachelor existence among their gardens and tenant farms. When Ambrose travels to Florence, Italy, for his worsening health and unexpectedly marries the beautiful, sophisticated half-Italian widow Rachel Donatella Donatello (Olivia de Havilland), Philip is immediately suspicious. Strange, increasingly desperate letters from Ambrose hint that Rachel may be slowly poisoning him, and when Ambrose dies under mysterious circumstances before Philip can reach Italy, the young heir returns to Cornwall consumed with a single burning purpose — to confront Rachel and expose her as a murderess.
But when Rachel arrives at the Cornwall estate shortly after, her beauty, intelligence, warmth, and apparent vulnerability completely disarm the inexperienced Philip. Rather than the cold-blooded poisoner he expected, he finds a gracious, witty woman who seems genuinely bereaved and bewildered by his hostility. Philip falls helplessly, obsessively in love, showering Rachel with expensive gifts, jewels that were his mother’s, and finally signing over his entire inheritance and the estate itself — even as disturbing evidence continues to mount. Mysterious herbal tisanes Rachel brews from exotic Italian plants, Philip’s own sudden bouts of illness after drinking her tea, the testimony of family lawyer Nick Kendall (Ronald Squire) who warns Philip he is being manipulated, and the quiet warnings of Nick’s daughter Louise (Audrey Dalton), who loves Philip herself — all point toward a terrible truth. Torn between passionate devotion and creeping doubt, Philip oscillates between adoration and fury, trust and suspicion, as the story builds toward a devastating climax. This classic movie masterfully sustains its ambiguity to the very end, never definitively answering whether Rachel is an innocent widow or a calculating killer.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
This colorized version of My Cousin Rachel reveals the dramatic Cornish cliffs, the grand estate interiors, and the sun-drenched Italian settings with atmospheric new visual depth. The original black and white cinematography captured the Gothic mood perfectly, but the professionally colorized restoration brings out the stormy grey-green Cornish seas crashing against the rocky cliffs, the lush emerald gardens where Rachel works among her exotic plants, the warm amber glow of candlelit dining rooms in the great house, the rich fabrics and period details of the Victorian costumes, and the golden sunlight of the Florentine flashback sequences with frame-by-frame precision. The contrast between Cornwall’s brooding, rain-swept landscapes and the warmth surrounding Rachel beautifully mirrors the film’s central mystery. Historical Significance
My Cousin Rachel marked Richard Burton’s American film debut and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, launching one of the most celebrated careers in cinema history. At just twenty-six, Burton’s raw magnetism and brooding intensity announced a major new talent — Darryl F. Zanuck signed him to a long-term contract immediately after seeing the rushes. Olivia de Havilland delivers a masterfully ambiguous performance that keeps audiences guessing decades later, using her natural grace and intelligence to create a Rachel who could be either angel or demon. The film won Academy Awards for Best Cinematography (Black-and-White) and Best Costume Design, with Joseph LaShelle’s atmospheric photography perfectly capturing the Gothic mood. The adaptation remains one of the most faithful and effective screen treatments of Daphne du Maurier’s work, alongside Rebecca. The colorization adds rich atmospheric beauty to this Gothic masterpiece.
