Plot Summary
Thunderbolt Jim Lang is one of the most feared gangsters in the city — a powerful, ruthless criminal whose very name strikes terror into the hearts of both rival gangsters and law-abiding citizens. When the police finally corner him after a dramatic chase, Thunderbolt is arrested, tried, and sentenced to death for murder. But behind bars, awaiting execution on death row, Thunderbolt proves just as dangerous as he was on the streets.
The source of Thunderbolt’s fury is personal. Ritzy, a beautiful young woman from the slums who was once his girl, has left him for Bob Morgan, a decent, honest young man who represents everything that Thunderbolt is not. Thunderbolt cannot accept that Ritzy has chosen a respectable life over the dangerous glamour he offered, and from his death row cell, he begins to plot a terrible revenge.
Through his network of criminal contacts that extends beyond the prison walls, Thunderbolt arranges for Bob to be framed for a crime he did not commit and sent to the same prison. Now Thunderbolt and the man who stole his girl are separated by only a few walls and bars, and the countdown to execution becomes a countdown to murder.
The tension on death row is suffocating. Bob, innocent and terrified, is trapped in a world he does not understand, while Thunderbolt moves through the prison like a predator, using his reputation and connections to manipulate both inmates and guards. Ritzy desperately tries to save Bob from the outside, but the machinery of justice and Thunderbolt’s ruthless cunning seem insurmountable. The film builds to a powerful climax as the execution date approaches and the question of whether evil will triumph even from the shadow of the electric chair reaches its resolution.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
The colorization of Thunderbolt brings the grimy, atmospheric world of late-1920s urban crime to visual life — the murky browns and greys of dingy speakeasies, the stark institutional green of prison corridors, the cold steel blue of death row cells, the warm amber of illicit nightclub lighting, the garish colors of gangster fashion, and the harsh artificial light of the prison that strips away all pretense and disguise create a visually compelling experience. Historical Significance
Thunderbolt represents a fascinating transitional moment in cinema history, made during the rapid shift from silent films to talkies that transformed Hollywood between 1927 and 1930. Director Josef von Sternberg, one of cinema’s great visual stylists, used the new technology of sound to create an atmosphere of claustrophobic menace on death row that would have been impossible in the silent era. George Bancroft, who had been one of the biggest stars of late silent cinema, delivers a performance that demonstrates how the best actors adapted to the demands of the microphone. Fay Wray, who would later achieve immortality as the heroine of King Kong, brings vulnerable beauty to the role of Ritzy. Through colorization, this important early sound film is preserved for modern audiences.
