Plot Summary
In 1838, the dream of crossing the Atlantic Ocean by steam power alone is dismissed as dangerous folly by seasoned sailors and powerful shipowners who have built their fortunes on wind and canvas. Scottish engineer John Shaw has devoted decades to proving that a steamship can make the voyage from England to America without once raising a sail, but years of failed experiments and mounting debts have broken his health and his reputation. When Shaw collapses during a critical demonstration, his brilliant young protΓ©gΓ© David Doig vows to carry on the work and complete what his mentor started.
David secures reluctant backing from American shipping magnate Doig and begins constructing a vessel designed to withstand the punishing Atlantic crossing under steam power alone. His efforts attract the attention of Mary, a spirited Scottish woman whose faith in David sustains him through sabotage attempts by rival sailing interests determined to protect their monopoly on transatlantic trade. As the departure date approaches, powerful enemies hire agents to damage the engine and bribe crew members to desert.
The voyage itself becomes a harrowing test of endurance and engineering. Terrible storms batter the ship, mechanical failures threaten to strand them mid-ocean, and coal supplies dwindle to dangerously low levels as the crew debates whether to turn back or press forward into the unknown. David must rally his terrified men, improvise repairs under impossible conditions, and gamble everything on the revolutionary technology that skeptics have declared a death trap. The final desperate push across the Atlantic builds to a rousing climax that celebrates human ingenuity triumphing over nature, doubt, and entrenched opposition.
