Plot Summary
“Le Dabe” retired many years ago and now he lives in the Tropics where he owns stables and horses. He is a very rich man. He was the king of all money counterfeiters, the most skilled and successful in his field. When he is contacted from Paris to organize a new counterfeiting job, he initially refuses, having no need for more money or the risks that come with criminal activity.
But when he finds out the currency that should be counterfeited is the Dutch florin, he accepts immediately. Le Dabe has a special connection to the Dutch florin — he retired after having counterfeited 100 florin notes just before Queen Wilhelmina retired them from circulation. This previous job was his masterpiece, and the opportunity to work with the Dutch florin again appeals to his professional pride and his desire to complete what he started.
He flies to Paris to take charge of the operation, but the gang is not to be trusted, at least not all of them. As Le Dabe assembles the team and plans the counterfeiting operation, he discovers that there are competing agendas and hidden loyalties within the group. Some members are willing to betray him for their own gain, while others may be working with the authorities. The film builds to a climax where Le Dabe must navigate a web of deception to complete the job and protect himself from betrayal.

Historical Significance
Released in 1962, The Counterfeiters of Paris represents the sophisticated crime dramas of the early 1960s, a period when Hollywood was producing films that explored the psychology and professionalism of criminals rather than just the action of their crimes. The film reflects the era’s fascination with the international jet set and the glamorous world of high-stakes crime that crossed national borders.
Charles Boyer, the legendary French actor who had been a major star since the 1930s, brings his trademark sophistication and elegance to the role of Le Dabe. Boyer, known for his romantic roles in films like “Gaslight” and “Love Affair,” here plays a criminal mastermind with the same charm and intelligence that made him a romantic icon. The film represents the later phase of his career, where he continued to command the screen with his distinctive presence.
The film’s focus on counterfeiting and the technical aspects of criminal craftsmanship reflects the 1960s interest in the professionalization of crime and the expertise required for sophisticated criminal operations. The film treats counterfeiting as an art form, with Le Dabe as the master artist who takes pride in his craft. This approach to criminality, which emphasizes skill and professionalism over violence, reflects a more nuanced view of crime that was emerging in 1960s cinema. Through modern colorization, this sophisticated crime drama reaches new audiences who can appreciate its elegant storytelling, Charles Boyer’s performance, and its exploration of the psychology of the professional criminal. Now also available en couleur.
