Plot Summary

Frank McCloud, a former Army major haunted by disillusionment after the war, travels to a small hotel on Key Largo to pay his respects to the family of a soldier who died under his command. He finds the hotel run by the dead soldier’s elderly, wheelchair-bound father James Temple and his beautiful widowed daughter-in-law Nora. But the Temples are not alone — the hotel has been commandeered by Johnny Rocco, a notorious deported gangster who has slipped back into the country and is using the isolated location as a base for a counterfeiting operation.

As a massive hurricane bears down on the Keys, Rocco holds the hotel’s occupants hostage, and what follows is an excruciating battle of wills in an enclosed space. Rocco is a creature of swagger and cruelty, humiliating his alcoholic girlfriend Gaye Dawn, bullying the elderly Temple, and probing McCloud for weakness. Frank, who has convinced himself that nothing is worth fighting for anymore, must decide whether to risk his life confronting evil or continue retreating into apathetic survival.

The hurricane becomes a physical manifestation of the moral storm raging inside the hotel. As the wind howls and shutters rattle, the tension between Rocco’s brute force and McCloud’s dormant courage builds toward a violent reckoning aboard Rocco’s escape boat. This classic movie remains one of the definitive explorations of what happens when an ordinary man is forced to stand against tyranny in its most immediate, personal form.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

This professionally colorized and restored version reveals visual dimensions that enhance every aspect of this claustrophobic thriller. The colorization process brings the turquoise waters of the Florida Keys, the warm wood and faded tropical décor of the besieged hotel, and the menacing storm skies into vivid atmospheric life. Edward G. Robinson’s sweating, cigar-chomping Rocco becomes even more repellent when rendered in fleshy, naturalistic tones, while Bogart’s weathered face and Bacall’s luminous presence gain emotional depth in full color. The shift from the sun-drenched beauty of the Keys to the greenish gloom of the hurricane creates a powerful visual arc that mirrors the film’s descent from hope into danger and back again. Now also available in colour.

Historical Significance

Key Largo marked a reunion of several towering talents in their artistic prime. Director John Huston had previously directed Bogart in The Maltese Falcon and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and together they created one of the most intense confined-space dramas in cinema history. The film also reunited Edward G. Robinson with the gangster archetype he had defined in Little Caesar (1931), though Rocco is a far more complex and pathetic figure — a relic of an older criminal era desperately clinging to power. Claire Trevor won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her devastating portrayal of an alcoholic singer degraded by Rocco, in what remains one of the most heartbreaking scenes in film noir. Adapted from a Maxwell Anderson play, Key Largo was also one of Hollywood’s first post-war films to grapple seriously with veterans’ disillusionment, asking whether the ideals men fought for overseas could survive contact with the corruption they found at home.
