Plot Summary

Calcutta, India — a city of teeming bazaars, grand colonial hotels, and shadowy underworld networks where anything can be bought, sold, or stolen. Neale Gordon (Alan Ladd) and Pedro Blake (William Bendix) are American pilots who run a freelance cargo operation out of the city, flying goods across the subcontinent in a business that keeps them comfortably outside the boundaries of respectable society while maintaining a rough code of honour among themselves.

When their third partner, Bill, is murdered, Neale’s grief transforms into cold, methodical rage. Bill had recently become engaged to Virginia Moore (Gail Russell), a hauntingly beautiful woman whose luminous exterior conceals motives that Neale cannot read. His investigation into Bill’s death quickly reveals that his partner had stumbled onto a lucrative jewel smuggling ring operating through Calcutta’s labyrinthine bazaar district — a discovery that cost him his life.

Neale’s pursuit of the truth draws him deeper into the smuggling network, where he encounters a cast of dangerous characters: the suave, treacherous crime boss who orchestrates the operation from behind a facade of legitimate business, the corrupt officials who protect the ring for a share of the profits, and the various small-time operators who serve as couriers, informants, and expendable pawns.

Virginia becomes the central mystery. Was she genuinely in love with Bill, or was her engagement part of the smuggling operation — a honey trap designed to ensure his silence or cooperation? As Neale spends time with Virginia, his suspicion wars with a growing attraction that he fights but cannot suppress. If Virginia is innocent, she is in mortal danger from the same people who killed Bill. If she is guilty, then Neale is walking into a trap that will end the same way his partner’s life did — violently and permanently.

The film builds through escalating violence and tightening suspense to a climax in the smuggling ring’s headquarters, where all deceptions are stripped away and the truth about Virginia, the jewels, and Bill’s murder is finally revealed amid gunfire and desperate confrontation.

Cast & Crew

Director: John Farrow
Stars: Alan Ladd, Gail Russell, William Bendix, June Duprez, Lowell Gilmore, Edith King

Alan Ladd is at his most compellingly dangerous — ice-cold, quietly lethal, and possessed of the compact physical authority that made him one of the most distinctive leading men of the 1940s. Gail Russell — one of Hollywood’s most beautiful and tragic figures — brings genuine mystery and vulnerability to Virginia, keeping the audience guessing about her true nature. William Bendix provides warmth and gruff humour as the loyal Pedro.

Historical Significance

Calcutta represents the fascinating subgenre of exotic noir — films that transport the hard-boiled detective formula to foreign locations, combining film noir’s moral ambiguity with the visual richness of adventure cinema. Alan Ladd was at the peak of his popularity when this was made, and the film showcases the unique screen presence — small in stature but enormous in intensity — that made him a phenomenon of 1940s Hollywood. Director John Farrow — father of Mia Farrow — was one of Hollywood’s most skillful craftsmen, capable of bringing atmospheric richness to genre material. The film’s Indian setting reflects the postwar fascination with exotic locations that would flourish throughout the late 1940s and 1950s. Through colorization, this atmospheric noir adventure has been preserved for modern audiences in a vivid new visual presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Movie-Specific Questions

Q: Is the Calcutta setting authentic?
A: The film uses studio sets and stock footage to create an atmospheric impression of Calcutta rather than filming on location. While not documentarily accurate, the visual atmosphere effectively captures the exotic, dangerous world of postwar India as imagined by Hollywood.

Q: How does Alan Ladd compare to other noir actors?
A: Ladd brought a unique quality to noir — smaller and quieter than Bogart, less overtly tough than Mitchum, but possessed of a cold intensity that made him genuinely menacing. His stillness on screen was more threatening than other actors’ aggression.

Q: Is Gail Russell’s performance noteworthy?
A: Russell brings genuine emotional complexity to what could have been a stock femme fatale role. Her luminous beauty combined with her ability to project both innocence and mystery makes Virginia one of the more compelling female roles in 1940s noir adventure.
